Description

In this lesson, students learn how to ask for an opinion and give an opinion.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for asking for an opinion and giving and opinion in the context of different opinions about famous people.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice to answer the exercise and repeat the useful phrases.
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a asking for an opinion and giving and opinion in the context of famous people.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Focus the students' attention on the photos of Beyonce(an American singer), Jude Law(an English actor) and Wayne Rooney(an English football player). Ask the students if they know anyone of them and what they know about them.

Exposure (2-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ask the students to read the conversations and then try to underline the right adjective in pairs or small groups.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Play the recording and ask the students and ask the students to underline the adjectives they hear. Play the recording again if it's needed. Check the answers with the class.

Clarification (2-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ask the students what the question "what do you think of..?" expresses. Ask the students which one of the responses is positive ,which one is neutral and which one expresses strong dislike.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Focus the students' attention on the two columns of the table. Ask them What types of phrases they can see. Ask them to categories the phrases in the box like the example. Divide the students into pairs and small groups to check their answers together. Play the recording for the students to listen and check their answers. Play the recording again for them to repeat.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ask the students to look back at the conversation in Exercise 1, and to circle the adjectives that best give their own opinion of these people. Put the students into pairs and small groups and ask them to practice the conversations,taking turns to be the person who asks the initial question, and using their own opinions to give response. Go around, monitoring and giving help.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask the students to write a list of their favourite actors, singers, bands, football players and writers. Put the students into pairs and ask them to take turns asking for their partner's opinion on the people on their lists.Then mingle the pairs to change partners and do the same. Go around, monitoring and giving help.
