Materials

Main Aims

  • To practice new vocabulary

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice reading for gist and reading for detail

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will ask "what do we do 3 times a day?" and elicit the answer "Eating & Drinking". Then T will ask Ss to discuss their eating habits and favourite meals in pairs followed by an open class feedback.

Pre-reading Activity (8-10 minutes) • To practice new vocabulary and prepare students for the text

T will write "Food verbs", "Kind of meal" and "Describing food" on the board, give Ss cutups and ask Ss to match cutups with suitable headings. This exercise will show which words need to be clarified. And the feedback for this exercise will show which words need to be drilled. T will introduce the idea of Comfort Food.

Reading for Gist (3-5 minutes) • To practice reading for gist

Ss will read the gist and decide how many comfort foods are discussed. They will read it again and write them under the topics of name, country and ingredients in pairs and talk about their own comfort food. T will ask to Ss if comfort food is the same for everyone. T will tell Ss they are about to read some information about different kinds of comfort food.

Reading for Detail (8-10 minutes) • To practice understanding of the text

T divides the class into A and B. Group A reads HOA, Group B reads HOB and they take notes up to 20 words. A tries to tell the story to B only with their own notes and visa versa. T asks CCQ to Ss.

Extra Topic: Taste (3-5 minutes) • To extend vocabulary

T asks what are the five senses and elicits the answer. If Ss do not know the meaning, the T gives it to them. T clarifies three ways of using the word "taste" and asks CCQ.

Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To expose students to the TL

T divides the class into 5 groups, gives cutups and asks them to discuss the questions with each other.
