Description

In this lesson, Ss practice new lexis based on the topic:Traffic Jams and problems related to big cities. Ss engage in a speaking activity using conversation cards based on means of transport and travel as a lead-in. Then, pictures of traffic jams in Dubai are displayed and Ss discuss on the same. This is followed by a wall walk to unblock vocabulary. Next, Ss are to match headings with short text/articles. After feedback on the previous activity, Ss differentiate and practice verbs cause and make. This is followed by a listening activity wherein Ss listen to a dialogue between two women based on the topic: Traffic Jams and problems related to big cities. Ss use the verbs they heard during the listening exercise and fill in the gaps. They practice functional language: for example- find a solution, solve the problem,etc. Ss then practice and review adjectives related to the topic. Lastly, Ss talk about the differences between rural and urban life and have a debate on which is better.

Procedure

Lead-in (7-9 minutes) • To activate students' schemata

Ss are given conversation cards. They are to work in pairs and are instructed to ask questions to each other using conversation cards. The cards are based on means of transport and traffic jams. Once they have completed the speaking task, WCFB is done. Ss are asked to share any interesting information about the topic based on the discussion they had with their partners.

Controlled reading practice (20-25 minutes) • For Ss to practice reading to draw inference.

Lead in: Pictures of traffic jams in Dubai are displayed. Ss are to discuss about the same in groups. They are to talk about: What are the causes of traffic jams? How do we solve this problem? Pre-reading task: Ss are given meanings of words related to the text and are asked to guess the meanings in groups. During WCFB, Ss are given the words and are asked to match it with the meanings. Reading Task: Ss are to work in pairs. They are given short newspaper articles and titles are asked to match the title to the article. Post reading Task: Ss check their asnwers with others in class. During WCFB, Ss share their answers with the class and reason out why a particular title matched with the article.

Controlled written practice • For Ss to differentiate and use the verbs cause and make accurately in sentences.

Lead-in: 2 sentences from the previous task are written on the board. Ss are asked to discuss the differences between cause and make in groups. They are are to make sentences using the two verbs. Written task: After the discussion, Ss are given a few written tasks on the use of cause and make. Pc and WCFB are done.

Listening for main ideas of the text and specific information (20-25 minutes) • For Ss to practice and improve listening for the main ideas and specific information.

Pre- listening task: Ss are to discuss: Problems of city life. How to deal or cope with them? Listening Task 1: Ss are instructed to listen to the conversation and decide which two topics they talk about. Ss discuss their answers among themselves before WCFB. Listen Task 2: Ss listen to the conversation again and note down all the verbs used with problem and issue. Ss check their answers with each other. The answers are then displayed on the board. Post Listening Task 1: SS are given a HO. They are asked to fill in the gaps and match verbs that can be used with words problem and compromise.

Controlled written practice (15-20 minutes) • For Ss to practice and improve functional language related to verbs used with problem and compromise.

Ss are given a HO. They are to work alone and complete two tasks. Task 1: Ss are to correct the mistakes in the given sentences. They check their work in groups. During WCFB, each group present their answers and the other groups say if their answers are right or wrong. Task 2: Ss are to fill in the blanks with the given adjectives. This task is related to big city life. Once Ss complete this task, they peer check their work. The answers are then displayed on the board.

Freer Speaking Practice - Role Play (20-25 minutes) • For Ss to speak fluently and accurately using lexis and functional language related to big city life.

Ss work in pairs. They are asked to choose any problem related to big city life excluding traffic jams. They are given 10 minutes to prepare a role play / interview between a journalist and governer/mayor of a big city. They are to introduce themselves and talk about: What the problem is? What are the causes of this problem? How it affects the people? What can be done to solve this problem? Ss are given 2 minutes to present the interview.
