Main Aims

  • To practice listening skills: prediction, gist and specific information

Subsidiary Aims

  • -To practice/reinforce target language: Where are you from? I'm from -vocabulary of Country and city names

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students with predicting and guessing

In order to get students to predict and guess my name, I'll write "Do you know my name?" on the board, I'll elicit the answers from them individually, I'll say the first letter of my name which is "S" so as to help them, then I'll go for the spelling to check whether they can remember or not, I'll ask " Can you spell my name?", then I elicit the answer from the WC

Pre listening (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I'll show a picture of a man and a woman and ask students two questions in order to have them guess 1- What's her name? 2- What's his name? then I'll elicit the answers. I'll try to elicit " I don't know " from them by using gesture/body language

Gist listening (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening

I'll tell them that they're going to listen to the audio file then I'll ask them a general question " where are they from? " then I'll ask an ICQ: 1- Are you going to tell me the whole idea or everything?[whole] after eliciting the answer I play the audio and then they can check orally whether they were right or not with a person next to them.

detailed Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening

I'll raise my hand in order to get their attention then I'll tell them that they are going to listen to the same audio in order to complete the conversation then I'll give them instruction by showing the HO 1 on my chest and I'll say: 'you are going to listen to the same dialogue and complete the conversation on your own(alone) then you'll check with your friends' then I ask ICQs so as to know if students understand the instruction given. Then I'll give them HO 1

while Listening (3-4 minutes) • To have learners listen and fill the gaps

I'll try to grab their attention by turning the lights on and off then I'll tell them that they are going to listen to a dialogue which includes 3 conversations and write the name of a city or a country. before playing the audio I'll tell them that in their pairs they are going to fill the blanks. If the instructions were not clear enough, I'll ask some ICQs:(1- Are you going to do it alone or with your partner? [partner]. 2- Are you going to write their names or their city/countries? [city/country]) then I set a time limit like " you have just 1 min " At the end I'll give them the answer key in order to manage the time.

while listening2#( focus on questions and answers) (5-8 minutes) • To do matching activity in order to consolidate the question and answer forms

For the next step, I'll talk about the matching activity, I'll change their groups by using some colored papers, they have to close their eyes and pick one of them then they should find their groupmates and sit next to them. I'll tell them that number one has been done(they can see it) for them so I'll check it by eliciting it like 'number one is?'... and then I'll give them time to match them all. While they are doing the activity, as the FB I'll write answers on the board to have them check theirs.

post Listening (5-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I'll stick a picture of the party on the board then I'll put them in pairs. I'll mention that they are going to make a conversation and practice it with their partners, in this case, I'll write a sample on the board in order to help them : A: Hello! what's your name? B: Hi,my name is .......... A: Where are you.......? then I'll ask some ICQs: 1- Are you going tp practice it alone or with your partner? [partner] 2- Are you going to talk about yourself or the picture? [picture] Then I'll tell them that they have 5 mins to do the activity. After that, I start monitoring and take some notes(errors) then at the end of the class I'll correct them by writing them on the board and asking Ss to help me with correction.
