Description

In this lesson, students will practice question forms with "how" and "what". They will read a text about Identity Theft, do gist and specific reading task. They will this up with a speaking, using "how" and "what" question forms.

Materials

Abc A Shoe Box

Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice question forms with "how" and "what"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of reading for specific information. To provide freer speaking practice of question forms.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • Introduce the topic of Identity Theft

T will show Identity Theft Visual 1 and ask Ss to name a few examples of identity theft.

Reading Task (4-5 minutes) • To practice reading for gist & To contextualise and introduce target language

T will give the students photocopies of Identity Theft Q&A reading. Ask them to look at the text quickly and decide where they might see a text like this. (a website, a newspaper, a book) They can check in pairs. T will ask them how they knew.

Highlighting target language (6-7 minutes) • To highlight the target language so that learners are focused on it

T will give students cut out words and ask them to put them in the correct places. They work in pairs. T gives WC feedback.

Clarifying target language (6-8 minutes) • To clarify form so that learners know how to construct it

T will give students cut outs of scrambled sentences, Ss will put the words in correct order to make questions. Ss will work in groups of 4-5. T hands out the answer sheet and they check their answers.

Clarify target language (7-8 minutes) • Clarify form so that learners know how to construct it

(If time permits) T give sentences to Ss, and asks them to write the questions in groups of 4-5. T gives answer sheet and Ss check themselves.

Speaking (11-12 minutes) • To provide controlled oral practice focused on using the language accurately

T tells the Ss to write 4 or 5 details about themselves but not their names and put their paper in the shoe box. They then pick one back from the box. Ss mingle in the class and try to find who has stolen their identity. T listen to Ss speaking, and do error correction on the board after the task.
