Main Aims

  • To provide ss specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about spending habits in the context of money.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of money.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To engage students in the topic of the lesson and activate students' top down processing.

Show ss a 1 Lira coin. Ask them to talk in pairs about what they can buy with 1 TL in Istanbul? Give each pair 1-2 minutes to talk about it and ask them to report back.

Pre-Listening (6-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible.

Put ss in groups of 3 by telling them different currencies. Tell them that they will work in pairs to walk around the class and read some sentences to help them match vocabulary items about money. Give ss Handout 1 with the words and the definitions. Give ss 3-4 minutes to walk around and complete the task. Elicit answers from different groups by giving them the marker and asking them to write the words on the WB.

Initial Easy Task (5-6 minutes) • To listen for a general understanding of the text or to listen for specific information.

Tell ss the title of the listening: Are you a spender or a saver. Ask them to talk in pairs for a minute to guess what the listening text will be about. Elicit a few ideas. Tell ss that now they will listen to the text. They need to decide how many of the speakers are savers.

Peer Check (1-2 minutes) • To build students' confidence before open class feedback.

Tell ss to check their answers in pairs by talking to their friend.

Feedback (2-3 minutes) • To enable students to see to what extent they have understood the text.

Elicit answers from ss to see if everyone agrees. Ask ss to justify their answers if there are different answers. If there are still different answers provide the answer.

More Detailed Task (5-6 minutes) • To listen for a more detailed understanding of the text.

Tell ss that they will listen to the text again to match the speakers with their spending habits. Give ss Handout 2.

Peer Check (1-2 minutes) • To build students' confidence before open class feedback.

Tell ss to check their answers in pairs by talking to their friend.

Feedback (3-4 minutes) • To enable students to see to what extent they have understood the text.

Elicit answers from ss to see if everyone agrees. Ask ss to justify their answers if there are different answers. If there are still different answers provide the answer.

Follow-up Productive Skills Task (5-6 minutes) • To develop students speaking skills.

Tell ss to talk in pairs about their own spending habits. Give them 5 situations on Handout 3 to help them find context to talk about. Help students as necessary and note down some of the things students are saying.

Feedback (3-4 minutes) • To get feedback on the content of the task.

Ask ss to report back and tell everyone about their friends' spending habits. Give verbal feedback on the content.

Language Feedback (4-5 minutes) • To enable students to notice their gaps between their own developing knowledge of the language and English itself.

Write 1-2 examples of good language and 3-4 examples of language which needs correction on the board. Tell ss to discuss the language in pairs, deciding which ones are correct and which ones need correction. Praise ss for the good language and elicit corrections for the rest.
