In this lesson, students practise present perfect continuous, since&for based on listening a dialogue about life changes. The lesson starts with a discussion by showing a picture of a man&baby. This is followed by listening for gist the dialogue to check their answers about the picture. Next stage is listening the dialogue in detail and answering the questions. Finally, there is a pairwork speaking practice activity about life-changing events.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of life changes

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about present perfect continuous, since&for in the context of life changes


Stage 1 (Lead in & pre-listening) (7 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and make the context of the lesson interesting for the SS

-Show the picture of the man & baby. -Ask Ss the questions in ex 1 -Get Ss in pairs to discuss what they think. -Take some general FB, but don't confirm any answers. -Explain that Ss need to know some words for the listening and check understanding of the words 'look after' and 'guilty'. (synonym of look after - Unfinished sentence for 'guilty' 'Yesterday my sister asked me to look after my niece and I said 'no' but later I felt --------)

Stage 2 (Listening for gist) (10 minutes) • To provide a controlled listening practice for gist

-Tell Ss to listen to the CD & answer the questions in ex 1 and see if their answers were correct. -Ss check their answers in pairs. -Take FB and check their answers.

Stage 3 (Listening for detail) (15 minutes) • to provide a controlled listening practice

-Get Ss to read the questions in ex 2 and talk together to see if they can remember any of the answers. -Play the CD and listen and check their answers Get Ss to check with their partners. -Take FB and ask them if there was anything they were surprised or interested about.

Stage 4 (Preparation for & freer speaking) (10 minutes) • To provide a controlled speaking practice (after aims completed)

-Draw a spider diagram on the WB and stick the flashcards about life-changing events. -Handout the speaking questions and get Ss in pairs to discuss the questions. -Take some general FB.

Stage 5 (Delayed Error Correction - if time) (3 minutes) • To correct their grammar mistakes

-Write the errors you noted on the WB -Get the Ss to correct them.
