Description

in this lesson students learn about imperatives in the context of advice and also practise speaking using useful phrases of advice (to tell someone to do or not to do something) and also practise fluency speaking in the context of favorite relative

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, practice and review of language used for giving advice in the context of family and travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • to give the students the opportunity to speak using useful language of giving advice
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of favorite relative

Procedure

lead in and exposure (presentation) (2-4 minutes) • to activate the students' background information and introduce them to the lesson

using flash cards on the board (brother,sister,father etc....) i ask them to find one word to describe all of these words they may say family and that's when i tell them to think again if they couldn't think of any other word i would show them the word (relative) so that the meaning is clear to them and they are able to give examples of relatives then i will ask them to repeat after me (relative)

controlled activity (practice) (3-4 minutes) • to help the students practice the target language in the context of "favorite relative"

show the student the picture in the book and tell them that the girl's name is Sophie and tell them that she's talking about her favorite relative then ask them to listen to the audio and underline the correct answer (use ICQ) check their answers and give them feedback

production (speaking , discussion) (5-7 minutes) • to give students the opportunity to practice fluency speaking (produce) using the target language in an uncontrolled exercise

ask the students to think about their favorite relative and then write down some sentences about him\her then i ask them to work in pairs and discuss their ideas about favorite relative with their partners then provide feedback

warmer (demonstrate the activity) (1-2 minutes) • to introduce the students to the meaning and uses of imperatives in the context of giving advice

focus students' attention on picture (a) exercise (1) "in this picture the father is telling his daughter to do something what is it?" and he's telling her not to do something else what is it?"

activity (controlled practice of useful phrases) (4-6 minutes) • to help the students practice the useful phrases of imperative in the context of giving advice

after solving this first example with them i ask students to complete the sentences using the verbs in the table(ICQ) then work in pairs to check their answers with their partners ask them to listen to the audio and check their answers play the audio again and ask them to listen and repeat the useful phrases

activity 2 (practice of useful phrases(imperatives)) (6-8 minutes) • to provide revision and practice on useful phrases (imperatives) in the context of a family discussion (giving advice)

show students the picture in exercise (2) and ask them "what do you think about this picture?" and tell them that the girl is travelling and her parents are advising her then ask them to work in pairs and read the dialogue and cross out "don't" when it's not needed (ICQ) play the audio and ask them to listen and check their answers then play it again and ask them to listen and repeat then ask the students to work in groups of three and practice the same conversation
