Description

In this lesson, students will learn some phrases about free time activities and will have practice in a reading text. They will practice reading for gist, specific and detailed in an interview in the context of free time activities. They will then have a speaking task as the follow up activtity .

Procedure

Review • To have a quick review on the previous lesson

T puts some pictures and jumbled sentences on the board. - Ss work in pairs to unjumble the sentences. Take FB- write the sentences. " I have a husband." " I don't have sisters or brothers." " I live in Gaziantep." " I work in a private school. " " I like Turkish food and Fernabache." " I don't like " Checks Ss are clear about the meaning using examples and asking individual Ss. Drill the sentences Ss stand up and mingle and meet other people in class, telling sentences about yourself. Ss sit down- take FB- Ss report to the class. Encourage them to say " This is ...., He/she has..." etc.

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T puts some pictures that she did yesterday in her free time Ask Ss " What is it?" Ss elicit some words, for example, "eat', 'food" etc. T will say, " it is after my work when you are free, you have tea, coffee, so it is your...?" Ss elicit " your free time" Drill the word with Ss Ask Ss to talk about what they usually do in their free time with their partners.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T projects some pictures on the board T shows the first picture and ask , " What does it show?" Ss will say, " TV" T will say, " Watch TV" and drill it with Ss. T will focus on the stress of phrase by marking the stress on WB. T will elicit and practice all the words with Ss, 1. go to concerts 2. go shopping 3. play tennis 4. play video games 5. go to the cinema 6. go out with friends 7. watch TV or DVDs 8. eat out T will project the written form of words and the pictures on the same page T says a pharse Ss in pairs will come to the board and slap the board to match the words with correct picture. FB: T gives a flashcard to each Ss and invite them to match on WB. Wholeclass feedback

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T says, " This is an interview with Ruby and Phil Conner (show pictures of Ruby and Phil) T give HO T asks Ss to read it quickly and find three things that they do in their free time T sets a time limit of 2 mins. ICQ: Read alone? Yes. Time? 2 mins. Find three or five things? Three Peer-check FB: T asks Ss to share their answers together

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T gives a HO True/False Questions. T asks Ss to read the text again T sets a time for 5 mins ICQ: alone/ together? alone. T monitors and help if necessary Ss check their answers in pairs. FB: T checks the answers ( When a Ss answer T, T asks other Ss T/F? and ask why to whole class) T asks them to correct the false questions.

Follow up activity (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T will say to Ss, " Do you remember what you have read?" T will divide the class into 2-3 groups T model the task first with her HO. Can I put "..." here? Ss will say " No" T says" brother?" Ss say " Yes" Ask them to come to the board ( two texts with some blanks in them are projected) T gives Ss some flashcards for each group Ask Ss to fill in the blanks with their group members. T monitors The winner is the one who finishes first. FB- T gives an answer key to check their answers with their group members.

Flexi-stage ( if time allowed) • To give Ss the chance to respond personally related to the text

"Find someone who" T gives out a questionnaire T tells Ss to interview each other Ss mingle and circulate the room Ss ask as many people as possible to find someone who... Ss write a person's name on the checklist sheet when they say 'yes' to one of the description Ss go on to the next question with another person T monitors FB- wholeclass feedback, make sure Ss use the phrases correctly.
