Description

Ss will look at an example of a job advert, noting what kind of language is used. They then see an example of an application letter. They are asked to find formal phrases and check their meaning. They then go on to write their own application letter. There is a final optional activity to write a job advert for Ss who finish early.

Procedure

Warmer/lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To engage the students and to provide the context of job applications for the lesson.

Start the lesson by appearing to be reading Hürriyet newspaper. Glance up from the newspaper as if suddenly you remember why you are there. Say you were just looking at the job postings. Asked Ss if they look through the job adverts. Say, ''Let's have a look at one in English''.

Reading job posting for a dream job (5-6 minutes) • To provide reading of a model job posting. To set context for task to follow.

Show HO1. Individual - Ss read advert. Clarify unfamiliar terms. Then pairs. Talk about the Qs on HO. Monitor. Invite some comments from Ss about whether job looks appealing.

Reading job application letter (6-11 minutes) • To provide a model for the task to follow. To highlight and clarify useful phrases.

Individual. First Ss read the letter. Then GW. Ss underline formal phrases. They also have to match the meanings. FB as whole group. Drill the phrases.

Writing an application letter (10-15 minutes) • To provide Ss with a scaffolded writing practice.

Individual. Show HO3. Ss to write a letter based on the model. Monitor and encourage where needed. Invite Ss with ''writer's block'' just to choose the phrases they will use first and put them in order. Then encourage them to fill in the gaps.

Peer feedback on writing. (2-5 minutes) • To give Ss confidence about writing before whole class FB.

Pairs. Ss compare answers. They should suggest improvements to each other. Then individual time to improve letters.

Whole group feedback (3-4 minutes) • To give whole class chance to see good examples and examples for reformulation.

Write on WB some good examples and examples needing reformulation. Praise all efforts.

Optional extra task for stronger Ss • To give more practice in writing in the context of job applications.

For stronger Ss, or early finishers. Give HO4. This will be largely Student self-directed. Can run parallel with the application letter activity. Feedback method depends on numbers of Ss involved.
