Procedure

Anecdote about an experience (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T: has anyone seen a traffic meter before? The teacher tells the following story to the students. T: I left my last job as an office cleaner because I had been given a parking ticket. It had happened when I was parking my car at the beginning of my work shift and the parking meter wouldn't accept any payment. I was already broke, and I was looking for a colleague to help me when the traffic warden jumped out from behind a tree and slapped a ticket on my windshield. I felt furious. I not only hat traffic wardens, I hate them with a vengeance. Sometimes that makes me a vindictive person. T uses ECDW to check the meaning of the vocabulary and put the form w-b

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T brainstorms some contrasting feelings w-b: starting with necessary evil T explains that they can express such contrasts in a clause using a linking word 'although' T elicits some examples from the students T asks some concept check questions. T drills some further examples using the sentence w-b T asks students to work in pairs and make some sentences of their own. T monitors and offers help. At the end T writes some student examples w-b and gives f-b w-c

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T tells the Ss that they are going to listen to the results of a survey about different jobs and answer some questions. T gives the handout material indicating the gist questions to the students. T: Any questions? T: three minutes, go. T gets some F-B and asks them if the speaking is too quick, (or too slow to follow). T: listen again and tick the things that are mentioned.T indicates to the students that they will only be working to the end of question 3. At the end T gets w-c f-b T does the same for the next three questions. If there is time the teacher will asks the students to do exercise 3 and check answers with the tapescript w-b

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T writes the instructions w-b and goes over them with the class. T gets the Ss into groups and tells them they have 5 minutes to complete their discussions T: Would the results of the survey be the same in your country?

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T opens the discussion T: What are the professions you most love to hate?
