Description

In this lesson, students learn about question tags through guided discovery based on a reading text about a conservation between two people. The lesson starts with a discussion about the dialogue between Yeşim and her mum. This is followed by answering questions about the conversation to clarify meaning and form of the target language. Finally there is some controlled an freer practice through sentence reformulation.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of question tags in the context of a conversation between two people

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a asking questions with the target language in the context of getting to know each-other

Procedure

Lead-in/Building context (1-2 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic of the text

T greets Ss T tells Ss that she is going to show a picture of her mum T asks Ss to look at the picture and guess why her mum is angry T starts telling a story about her mum (My mom is always angry with me and I am so sad about it.)

Reading task (3-4 minutes) • To contextualise and introduce the target language

T shows the hand out to Ss T asks Ss to read the text and answer the first questions with their partners ICQ: Are you answering the first question or are you answering all the questions? (first question) T gives the hand outs to Ss. (You have 2 minutes.) T elicits the answers as WC

Highlighting target language (2-3 minutes) • To highlight the target language so that learners are focussed on it

T asks Ss to answer the question 2 individually (1 minute) ( Underline all the question tags in the conversation above. ) T asks Ss to peer-check T shows the answers on the board

Clarifying target language #1 (7-8 minutes) • To identify the meaning of the statements and the question tags by putting them in to the right column

T asks Ss to put the statements and the question tags in to the right column in the exercise 3 individually (5 minutes) T asks Ss to check their answers in their groups T monitors Ss to do error corrections while they are checking their answers T elicits the answers from WC and writes the statements and the question tags on the board

Clarifying target language #2 (2-3 minutes) • To clarify meaning so learners can understand the negative and the positive forms

T asks Ss to answer the question 4 individually. (1 minute) (Are the statements and the question tags negative or positive?) T asks Ss to check their answers in their groups T elicits the answers as WC and writes the answers on the board

Clarifying target language #3 (2-3 minutes) • To clarify the meaning so learners can understand that they are not really questions but are a way of asking the other person to make a comment to keep the conversation open

T asks Ss to answer the questions on 5 individually (1 minute) (Why are the tags used here? Tick the right answer) T elicits the answers as WC CCQ: Do we ask these questions to ask for information or check information? (yes)

Clarifying target language #4 (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the pronunciation so learners can understand that the difference intonation on the question tag can change the meaning

T reads the sentences with a certain intonation and asks Ss where the stress is T marks the stress on the board and ask CCQ * Does her mum know that Yeşim didn't do her homework? (Yes) * Is her mum sure about the statement? (Yes) * Is her mum asking for information or checking information? (checking information) T repeats the same step for each question. (intonation differences are pointed out)

Clarifying target language #5 (4-5 minutes) • To clarify form so that learners know how to construct it

T shows another hand out to Ss T asks Ss to match the given tenses with the sentences Ss do this task individually (2 minutes) T asks Ss to check their answers in their groups T elicits the answers as WC

Language Practice #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide controlled written practice focused on using the language accurately

T shows Ss the controlled practice 1 T asks Ss to match the statements with the questions tags individually (3 minutes) T asks Ss to check their answers in their groups T shows the answers on the board

Language Practice #2 (6-7 minutes) • To provide controlled written practice focused on using the language accurately and in different tenses

T shows the practice 2 to Ss T asks Ss to fill in the blanks (5 minutes) T asks Ss to check their answers in their groups T shows the answers on the board

Language Practice #3 (6-7 minutes) • To provide freer oral practice and use the language productively

T shows the practice 3 to Ss T tells Ss that they are going to ask questions to each-other T shows the key words on the board and gives an example T divides Ss to two group. Ss line up and ask questions to their partners T monitors for a later error-correction T does error-correction FINISH!
