Description

In this lessons the students will be tested on there knowledge of Modal Verbs. Depending on there level of knowledge, the lesson will focus on clarification and practice.

Procedure

Lead in / Building Context - (3-5 minutes) • Activate St's interest in the existing knowledge of the topic

Sixth Sense lead-in. Have Sts predict what the next task will be using there sixth-sense. :-)

First Diagnostic Test (10-12 minutes) • Clarify issues learners have with meaning.

Elicit Vocab: Write on the board. Earthquake. Behavior. Perceive Changes. Magnetic Field. Impending Disaster. Give the first handout (H01). Have the students work as individuals, no pair work to answer the questions. Then PW, check answers in pairs. Monitor for correct incorrect answers. For clarification later. Give the answer key. Go through it find out which answers the students had problems with.

Teach Clarifying (10-12 minutes) • Clarify issues with meaning

Clarify problems indentified in the first test. - Should / Shouldn't (obligation) - must / mustn't (necessity / logical necessity) - can (expresses possibility in 3 ways) ability, permission, general possibility - could (expresses possibility in 3 ways) ability, permission, general possibility - may (expresses possibility in 3 ways) ability, permission, general possibility - might (expresses possibility in 3 ways) ability, permission, general possibility

Second Test (Controlled Practice) (7-10 minutes) • To test what the learners have learnt from the teach stage

First identify task. Gap Fill, using animals. Match the animals to the sentences. Use a modal to complete the sentence. Ask if there are any animals they cannot identify. Clarify. Clarify Task. ICQ. Give H04 to Sts. Check answers in PW. Monitor for problems. Clarify. Give H05 to check there answers.

Second Test - Freer Practice (10-12 minutes) • Provide freer practice

First identify task. Have students read the myths HO, in order to discuss as PW using Modals of possibility.. Give H06. Myths. Set time limit. Ask if there are any animals they cannot identify. Clarify. Clarify Task. ICQ. Give H07 to Sts. Compare answers in Groups using Modal Verbs for H07. Speaking Activity. Monitor for problems. Clarify. Play . T 9.2 for Answer. Clarify. Give H03 as Modal Material for students.
