Philip's Lesson: Reading and vocabulary.

Description

In this lesson students develop their reading skills and vocabulary through two different texts on the context of growing up as a child.There is a first reading for gist, second reading for specific information and a third reading for detailed information. This is followed by a controlled practice match words with meaning activity and finally the lesson finishes with a free activity with students sharing about their families.

Main Aims

  • To develop students reading skills in the context of a family through reading two texts entitled younger brother and the only child.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with opportunity to build their vocabulary in the context a family through reading two texts entitled the younger brother and the only child.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T sticks 4 pictures on the WB -sad face,happy face, happy family and sad family. -Ss predict what they see -T tells ss to share with partner their predictions -T provides answer key -Ss match the answer ley with pictures.

Pre-Reading (0-2 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-T tells ss to pair up in Apples (A) and Bananas (B) -T reads instructions to the ss -T gives texts to A's and B's.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist information reading tasks.

-T tells students to read for 3 minutes. -Share with partner questions 1 and 2. -T nominates 2 to 3 ss to share what they found out from their partner.

While-Reading#2 (10-17 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks.

-T gives instruction about reading the entire text. -T explains the task -T writes an example on WB -Ss then complete the task - match the words with definitions. -Peer check. -Provide the answer key on the WB/or on the wall. -Get feedback on the activity. -T tells ss to talk to their partners and ask?...Do you have.....?

Post-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-T gives a list of vocabulary items in the text. -A list of five -Students to practice pronunciation-model,drill the vocabulary words in the text.
