This lesson will focus on wh- questions referring back to an article about an English family.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of wh- questions in the context of a British family.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of getting to know each other

Procedure

Warmer and Exposure (5-8 minutes) • to set lesson context and engage students and to provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- -Refer back to the text- the article about the Castle family.(link with the previous lesson) - Play memory game. (How much do you remember?) - Give the handout. The wh- questions are in bold. - Ss work in pairs and circle the correct answer. - Elicit the answers from the ss and write them on the board.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-Give a handout. -Ask ss to match the question words with their uses. -Ask ss to compare their answers. - Ask ss to come to the board and match the words with the uses.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- Draw attention the board. Put each question next to the wh- question words. - Ask CCQs in the language analysis to clarify the meaning. - Focus on the form bu highlighting the position of the wh- question word. (Elicit the rule from the students by CCQs. - Focus on the pronunciation, sentence stress in wh- questions( as in language analysis) - Model and drill. (individually and chorally) (backchaining) ( if time: substitution drill)

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Give a handout. - Ask ss to do the first exercise individually. - Monitor and help when necessary. - Ask them to compare their answers. - Elicit the answers and write them on the board.

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

- Give a handout. - Ask ss to match the questions in exercise 1 with he answers in exercise 2 - Monitor and help when necessary. - Ask ss to compare their answers. - Elicit the answers from the ss and write the answers on the board.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- Give a class survey. - Ask ss to make questions using the prompts. - Elicit the answers from the students. - Ask them to stand up and ask each question to two of their friends in class. - Ask them to find out who has the same or similar answer. - Monitor discreetly and intervene when necessary. -If time: Take notes of good examples and mistakes and so delayed error correction at the end.
