Main Aims

  • To provide ss detailed reading practice using a text about accomodation for language students in the context of advertisements.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide ss clarification of accomodation words in the context of advertisements.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show ss Picture 1 and ask them "What can you see in the picture?" Elicit some ideas from ss. Try to elicit the idea of moving to a new home with the help of the pictures. Ask ss "When do you find a new home?" Show ss Picture 2 and try to elicit the answer "(When you move to a) New City or Country".

Pre-Reading (Vocabulary) (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Put ss in pairs by making them all stand up and making two lines. Ask them to stand facing the other ss in the other line. Tell ss they are going to work in pairs with the student across them. Tell ss to sit with their new pairs. Tell ss they are going to see 8 words and 8 definitions. They must work together to match the words with the correct definitions. Show ss an example on the board using the OHP. Do the first one together. Give ss HO1. Tell ss that they have 2 minutes to match the words with the correct definitions in pairs. After 2 minutes elicit each answer from different pairs. Clarify any word that the students are unsure of on the WB by using the following CCQs: Share: Bills: Per: Childcare: Foreign: House-sit: PCM: Bedsit: Next quickly go through each vocabulary item to clarify pronunciation. Focus on WC and individual drilling.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Tell ss to stay in the same pairs and walk around the class and read the advertisements around the room to fill in a chart. Show them first ad using the OHP and the chart on the side. Find out the answers for the first question together. Give each pair one HO2 with the chart of information to fill in. Tell ss that they have 6 minutes to walk around and read each ad and fill out the chart they have. At the end of the 6 minutes, elicit the answers from ss by inviting them to the board and complete the chart on the board together. Encourage ss to justify their answers.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Tell ss that they are going to read profiles of six people who are going to Cambridge to study English for three months. They have to match each person with the most suitable accommodation. Give ss HO3 in 7 cut up pieces. Tell them they have 8 minutes to match each profile with the best accommodation for them. Write We think accommodation (A) is good for (Christophe) because... on the board while ss are working. When the time is up, get ss to tell the class about their choices by using the sentence structure on the board. Encourage them to justify their answers. Give positive verbal feedback for any attempt as long as they can justify it since there are no correct answers in this activity.

Post-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Tell ss to imagine that they are going to study in Cambridge for 3 months so they need to find a place to stay in. Tell them to write their own profiles. In their profile they must include their basic information like age, country, job, likes/dislikes. They can get help from the example profiles they have. Early finishers can read each others profiles and answer "What are his/her likes/dislikes?"

Flexi-stage - If time (4-6 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask ss to write an advertisement about their homes in İstanbul imagining they are looking for people for their flat. While ss work on this put the student profiles that they have written on the WB. Next ask ss to walk around the class and find someone who would be suitable to live in their flat.
