Writing an email and present continuous

Description

In this lesson, students will review present continuous and be going to for future. They will also practice writing an informal email. A few pictures on different modes of transport are displayed. Class discuss on the same. Then Ss are given an example of a email. They are given few sentences and are asked to fill in the gaps and put them in order. Next Ss write an email using present continuous and be going to for future. A few pictures of different holiday/ weekend spots in London are displayed and Ss discuss on the same. Ss are given a HO based on the pictures. The handout is based on different activities across London. Ss are to choose a few and create a diary stating all that they would do during a long , three day weekend. This is followed by another activity where Ss are shown pictures of different holiday/weekend spots in Dubai. They are to create a rubric using those pictures. The rubrics are swapped between the groups and Ss talk about the different activities they would be interested in during the weekend.

Main Aims

Procedure

Lead in • To activate students' schemata

Pictures of different means of communication are displayed. Ss discuss about the same. They share the advantages and disadvantages of the different means of communication. This lead in to the the next activity, where in Ss are to order an email and fill in the gaps with present continuous tense.

Controlled written practice • For Ss to clarify and review present continuous / be going to for future in an email

Ss are given strips with sentences. Task 1: They are to fill in the gaps. Tr questions Ss: What did you fill in the gaps with - Ans Present continuous / be going to for future/verbs. Tr asks CCQs on the same. Eg: Are they talking of something they are doing in the present? Ans- No ,,future Task 2: Order the sentences. PC and WCFB are done. Ss work in pairs to complete both the tasks.

Less controlled Written Practice • To practice the use of present continuous and be going to for future to write an email

Tr displays a few prompts and instructs SS to write an invitation in the form of an email. Ss also refer to Unit 3.1 in their text books. Ss work in pairs. Once they complete the task, they exchange and check what the other pair has written. WCFB is done.

Task 1: Tr displays pictures of different holiday spots in London. Ss are instructed to talk about: What they see? Why people go there? When they visit these places? Draw a comparison between weekends in Dubai to that of London. Task 2: Ss are given a HO of a rubric of different things people could do during a long weekend in London. Ss are to make a diary entry, choosing activities they would like to do during a long weekend. Ss work in pairs. PC and WCFB are done.
