Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about on how we learn to connect in a new place in the context of in the context of story

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of any new words in the context.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

 Teacher shows a photo of first day in School  Teacher tells ss to look at the photo and tell their partner how they felt the first time in grade 6 and how do they make new friends Teacher give example and ss work in group of 3  Teacher puts students in groups of 3 and gets them to brainstorm on this picture and the question. on page 87  Whole class feedback

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • Pre- Teach Vocab To deal with any vocab to help students better understand the reading in coming stages.

 Teacher hangs some pictures on the wall and tell ss to match words in Handout 1 with the pictures.  Teacher demo one example  Teacher HO#1 to ss  Students work in 3s  Teacher monitors.  Whole class feedback  Teacher provides CCQs to check meaning Teacher drills.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • Reading for gist To provide students with less challenging gist and enable students to gain general understanding of the context

 Teacher hands HO#2 (reading text)  Teacher asks students to read quickly and do the gist task HO#2.  Students discuss in groups of 3.  Whole class feedback  Teacher hands the answer key W/C F/B

While-Reading 2 (14-16 minutes) • Reading for specific information to provide students with specific information about the context.

 Teacher asks students to read H/O#2 again and answer True/False question relating to the article.  Students are asked to see what they can remember. Ss work alone.  T monitors  Students check answers with partners  T monitors and later hands the answer key

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To give students a chance to practise other skills based on the understanding of the text

T pairs students into 2 group and tell them that a group believe Lucinda doesn't like New Jersey compare to Cuba while the other believes "Lucinda likes New Jersey more than Cuba". T tells students to give three points only to support their topic. T allows students to discuss in their group T swap few members of the group to exchange their idea with others group T takes feedback from each group T makes correction where necessary and allow students to make pair errors correction. students discuss  T monitors  T takes whole class Feedback
