Main Aims

  • To provide process and product writing practice of using formal and informal styles in the context of business correspondence.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of language used for useful phrases in the context of typical email phrases.


Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write a welcome note for students using smileys, exclamation marks and abbreviations. Students to re-write the statement in a formal style.

Controlled Practice (15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Unit 4, Pg 25 & 26, Writing 1 Q1 Pairs to complete by replacing underlined phrases with the less formal style. Check answers with whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (30 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Pg 26, Q2 - competition of pairs Q3 - Sentence by sentence - students to correct out loud. Q4 - Individual work - write out in full.

Free Practice (15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Unit 4, Pg 27 Useful Phrases Pairwork to consider 1-8 Write up sentences, as provided by students, on the WB
