In this lesson, the students will practice their reading skills (gist, reading for specific and detailed information) with a text about housework

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about housework in the context of a family

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of housework words in the context of family


Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To activate students' knowledge of the topic and generate interest in it

I will write 'housework' on the board and ask the students about its meaning showing the two words in it (house and work). I will ask them to give me some example of the possible tasks and then to discuss with their partner about what do they do or not in their home so I have an idea of the vocabulary they already know. Then I will ask some of them to tell me about their partner.

Pre teach vocabulary (3-6 minutes) • To unblock key lexis needed to help students understand the text and complete the net tasks

I will show them pictures of flat, barbecue and help for them to guess the meaning of this words. Then I will write them on the board and drill the pronounciation.

Reading for gist (5-10 minutes) • To encourage students to read for general understanding and get an overview of the text

I will give them 20 seconds to read the text to have catch key words and guess its main idea. Once the text hidden, they will share their ideas with a partner and write a sentence. They can switch partners if we have time

Reading for specific information (10-15 minutes) • To practice reading for specific information

I will explain and show an example : "I will say a word and you will look for it in the text. Once you saw it, you raise your hand and say 'I found it !'. The first one will read the sentence in witch the word I said have been seen. If it is true, I start again with another word . If it's not true, I ask another person.

Reading for detailed information • To practice reading for detailed information

I will give then a handout with True or false sentences about the text. They must tick or correct them. Then check their answers with a partner while I will write the answers on the board. I will then ask some students to correct the questions 1, 3, 5, 7.

Post-Reading Task (8-12 minutes) • To allow an opportunity to react to the text and develop written fluency on the topic and personalize it

I will ask the students to write about their families when they were young. Who was cooking, cleaning, working? I will ask if anyone wants to read his text and ask them to switch their text with a partner to correct it and discuss about it.
