A2-B1 level

Description

In this lesson, students will continue practicing the two past tenses, but they will also learn how to make their descriptions more precise by explaining how an action happened.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • Differentiate and use Simple Past and Past Continuous accurately when describing completed actions, ongoing situations, and interruptions.
  • Identify, form, and use adverbs of manner to describe how actions were performed.
  • Integrate adverbs of manner with both past tenses in meaningful veterinary and everyday contexts.
  • 1. Produce a coherent spoken and written account of a past event, including relevant details about how actions occurred.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Reinforce Week 2 veterinary and general vocabulary through contextualized communication.
  • Improve grammatical accuracy when switching between Simple Past and Past Continuous.
  • Expand descriptive vocabulary using adverbs such as carefully, quickly, slowly, calmly, clearly, correctly, gently, quietly, well, and badly.
  • Develop speaking fluency when narrating past experiences and explaining unexpected situations.
  • Improve their ability to organize events chronologically.
  • Practice self-correction and peer feedback.

Procedure

Warm-up: What Was Happening? (8-10 minutes) • To reactivate students' knowledge of Simple Past and Past Continuous and identify whether they can select the correct tense without explicit grammar prompts.

Procedure: 1. Students work in pairs. 2. Give each pair the following situations. 3. Students must describe what was happening and what happened. 4. Encourage them to use when and while naturally. Situations: 1. A veterinarian was examining a dog. The dog suddenly threw up. 2. A technician was monitoring vital signs. An alarm sounded. 3. A student was practicing English. The internet connection stopped working. 4. Two veterinarians were discussing a diagnosis. An emergency patient arrived. Follow-up: Ask students to explain why they used each tense.

Student-Led Grammar Investigation: Adverbs of Manner (8-10 minutes) • To enable students to independently discover how adverbs of manner are formed, positioned, and used, including common irregular forms, through collaborative research and peer explanation.

Make 2 teams Assign research topics: Team A – The Formation Experts Research: 1. What is an adverb of manner? 2. How do we usually form one from an adjective? 3. What happens to adjectives ending in -y? 4. What are some irregular forms? 5. Can an adjective and an adverb have the same form? Find examples using careful, happy, good, fast, and hard. Team B – The Sentence Experts Research: 1. Where do adverbs of manner usually appear? 2. Can they appear after the verb? 3. What happens when the verb has a direct object? 4. Can we use them with Simple Past? 5. Can we use them with Past Continuous? Find examples using carefully, slowly, clearly, gently, and quickly. Each team teaches what they researched, while the other teams takes notes. Teacher Verification After the students present, confirm these key findings: Adjective Adverb careful carefully quick quickly gentle gently happy happily good well fast fast hard hard Important distinctions: - "The veterinarian was careful." — adjective describing the veterinarian. - "The veterinarian worked carefully." — adverb describing how the veterinarian worked. - "The technician checked the equipment carefully." — the adverb follows the object. - "The surgeon was working carefully." — adverbs of manner can modify actions in Past Continuous. Students should also recognize that hardly does not mean "with great effort."

Controlled Practice: Grammar in Context (13-15 minutes) • o reinforce students' accuracy when selecting past tenses and forming appropriate adverbs of manner within contextualized sentences.

Complete each sentence using the correct past tense and the appropriate adverb form. Students work individually for 8 minutes, compare answers for 3 minutes, and review the exercise as a group for 4 minutes.

Role-Play: Explain What Happened (18-20 minutes) • To improve students' ability to explain previous events clearly and professionally using past tenses and adverbs of manner in realistic interactions with pet owners.

Roles: One veterinarian and one pet owner per pair. Scenario 1 – Post-Surgery Explanation The owner wants to know what happened during their pet's surgical procedure. Veterinarian: Explain what the surgical team was doing, what happened during the procedure, and how the team responded. Owner: Ask about the procedure, the patient's condition, and the actions taken. Scenario 2 – Emergency Consultation A pet owner arrives after their dog suddenly became sick at home. Owner: Explain what you were doing, what your dog was doing, and what happened. Veterinarian: Ask questions about the timeline and how the symptoms developed. Language Challenge: Each student should use at least two adverbs of manner and both past tenses. Procedure: 1. Assign roles and allow 3 minutes of preparation. 2. Students perform the first role-play. 3. Switch roles or scenarios. 4. Repeat with a different partner. 5. Provide feedback on accuracy, fluency, and appropriate use of adverbs.

Exit Ticket (8-10 minutes) • To quickly assess whether students can select appropriate past tenses and adverbs of manner without assistance.

Complete the following: 1. The veterinarian __________ (examine) the dog when the owner __________ (arrive). 2. The technician handled the patient __________ (gentle). 3. While the surgeon __________ (operate), the technician __________ (monitor) the vital signs. 4. Write one sentence using an adverb of manner and Simple Past. 5. Write one sentence using an adverb of manner and Past Continuous. Scoring: 2 points per task, for a total of 10 points.
