  • Describe ongoing actions that were interrupted by shorter, completed events.
  • Use when and while to connect actions and events accurately.
  • Narrate past experiences and veterinary situations using both tenses appropriately.

  • Improve grammatical accuracy when choosing between past tenses.
  • Develop fluency when narrating previous experiences and clinical situations.
  • Practice asking follow-up questions about past events.

Procedure

Warm-up: What Happened? (8-10 minutes) • To activate students' knowledge of both past tenses and encourage them to recognize the difference between an ongoing action and a completed event.

Write these sentences on the board: 1. I was studying English at 8:00 p.m. 2. I finished my homework at 8:00 p.m. 3. The technician was monitoring the patient. 4. The patient suddenly moved. Ask students: - Which sentences describe actions in progress? - Which sentences describe completed events? - Can we combine sentences 3 and 4? - What happens to the meaning when we combine them? Then ask students to describe one thing they were doing yesterday and one thing they finished yesterday.

Grammar Investigation: Past Continuous vs. Simple Past (18-20 minutes) • To enable students to independently investigate, identify, and explain the differences between Simple Past and Past Continuous, including their use with when and while, through research, collaborative analysis, and peer teaching.

Separate them into two teams, and give each team one of the topics to research. Give them time to do their research Each team goes to the front to explain their topic. Students should present: - The rules they discovered, using their own words. - At least two original examples. - One common mistake other students should avoid. While one pair presents, the other pair takes notes and asks at least one question.

Controlled Practice: Choose the Correct Tense (13-15 minutes) • To improve accuracy when selecting Simple Past or Past Continuous according to the meaning and context of each sentence.

Students work individually, compare answers in pairs, and explain their choices during group feedback.

When & While Sentence Challenge (13-15 minutes) • To develop students' ability to combine ongoing and completed past actions into coherent sentences using when and while.

Students work in pairs. Each pair combines all six situations. Students rewrite three sentences using a different clause order. Each pair reads its sentences aloud. The teacher provides feedback.

Clinical Incident Reconstruction (18-20 minutes) • To enable students to reconstruct past clinical events and use Simple Past and Past Continuous to describe what was happening before and during an unexpected incident.

Organize the events into a logical timeline. Some events happened simultaneously. Write a report of 8–10 sentences describing the procedure and the incident. Use at least four Week 2 vocabulary items. Include at least three sentences combining Past Continuous and Simple Past. Present the report orally.

Speaking: Unexpected Situations (18-20 minutes) • o develop students' fluency and confidence when narrating unexpected events using both past tenses naturally and accurately.

Instructions: Choose a story starter and continue the story. The teacher will introduce an unexpected event that students must incorporate. Story Starters: 1. "Last Friday, I was working at the clinic when..." 2. "Yesterday evening, I was studying English while..." 3. "One day, I was preparing for a surgical procedure when..." 4. "I was talking to a pet owner when..." Unexpected Events: - The lights suddenly went out. - A dog started barking loudly. - Someone dropped an instrument. - Your phone rang. - A patient unexpectedly threw up. - The clinic's computer stopped working.
