Main Aims

  • Form affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences using Past Continuous with greater accuracy.
  • Describe actions that were in progress at specific moments in the past.
  • Ask and answer questions about what people were doing at particular times.
  • Use Past Continuous to describe simultaneous activities in veterinary and everyday situations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Reinforce Week 2 vocabulary through contextualized activities.
  • Improve speaking fluency when describing past activities.
  • Practice subject–verb agreement with was and were.
  • Develop confidence in asking and answering questions.
  • Improve the pronunciation of was, were, wasn't, and weren't in connected speech.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To activate students' knowledge of past activities and introduce the concept of describing actions that were in progress at a particular moment.

Write the following times on the board: 7:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. 2:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Ask students what they were doing yesterday at each time. Example: Teacher: "What were you doing yesterday at 10:30 a.m.? Student: "I was working at the clinic." Follow-up: "Were you examining patients?" Student: "No, I wasn't. I was preparing medication." Have students ask each other similar questions.

Grammar Presentation: Past Continuous (13-15 minutes) • To establish the meaning, form, and pronunciation of Past Continuous in affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences.

Grammar Reference Affirmative: Subject + was/were + verb-ing The technician was monitoring the patient. Negative: Subject + wasn't/weren't + verb-ing The surgeon wasn't preparing the instruments. Yes/No question: Was/Were + subject + verb-ing? Was the dog recovering from anesthesia? Wh-question: Wh-word + was/were + subject + verb-ing? What was the veterinarian doing? Subject–Verb Agreement Subject: I, he, she, it Auxiliary: was Subject: You, we, they Auxiliary: were Uses of Past Continuous 1. Temporary activities happening during a period in the past "Last week, I was practicing my English every evening." 3. Simultaneous actions "At 10:00 a.m., the surgeon was operating, and the technician was monitoring the patient's vital signs." Pronunciation Focus Practice the following sentences aloud: - "I was preparing the operating room." - "They were monitoring the patient." - "She wasn't administering the anesthetic." - "Were you checking the vital signs?" Focus on natural pronunciation and stress, especially the difference between was and were.

Wh-question using Where: __________________________________ Extension: Students create two original Past Continuous sentences and challenge their partners to transform them.

What Was Happening at the Clinic? (18-20 minutes) • To develop students' ability to describe multiple simultaneous actions at a specific time using Past Continuous and relevant veterinary vocabulary.

Scenario: Yesterday at 10:30 a.m., the veterinary hospital was extremely busy. Everyone was doing something different. Happy Paws Veterinary Hospital – 10:30 a.m. Dr. Carter: Performing a surgical procedure. Dr. Wilson: Examining a dog with gastrointestinal symptoms. Technician Sarah: Monitoring the vital signs of an anesthetized patient. Technician James: Preparing sterile surgical instruments. Receptionist Emily: Speaking with a pet owner about an appointment. Mrs. Lopez: Waiting for news about her dog's recovery. Procedure: 1. Give students three minutes to review the situation. 2. Ask them to write six sentences describing what was happening. 3. In pairs, students ask and answer questions about the staff and patients. 4. Each pair gives a short oral description of the clinic. 5. Ask students to identify which activities were happening simultaneously. Example Questions: - What was Dr. Carter doing at 10:30 a.m.? - Was Dr. Wilson performing surgery? - Who was monitoring the patient's vital signs? - Were the technicians working in the same area? - What was Mrs. Lopez doing?

The Veterinary Security Camera (18-20 minutes) • To strengthen students' ability to recall and communicate information about ongoing past actions using Past Continuous questions and statements.

Scenario: A security camera recorded the clinic's activities at 11:00 a.m. yesterday. The recording is now unavailable, but students must reconstruct what was happening. Preparation: Give each pair a different information sheet. Students must not show their sheets to the other pair. Students ask each other questions to reconstruct all eight activities. 5. Students write a complete report of what was happening at 11:00 a.m. Language Requirements: Students should produce at least four questions and eight affirmative sentences in Past Continuous.

Speaking: What Were You Doing? (13-15 minutes) • To increase students' confidence and fluency when discussing real past activities through spontaneous Past Continuous questions and answers.

Procedure: 1. Students work in pairs. 2. Give each pair a set of conversation questions. 3. Students take turns asking and answering. 4. Encourage follow-up questions. 5. Switch partners halfway through. Conversation Questions: 1. What were you doing yesterday at 8:00 p.m.? 2. What were you doing last Saturday morning? 3. What were you doing at this time last week? 4. Exit Ticket (8-10 minutes) • To assess students' independent ability to form and use Past Continuous accurately in different sentence structures.

Instructions: Complete the following tasks. 1. Write an affirmative Past Continuous sentence about a veterinary procedure. 2. Write a negative Past Continuous sentence about something you weren't doing yesterday. 3. Write a Yes/No question using Past Continuous. 4. Write a Wh-question using Past Continuous. 5.
