Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of I'm good at in the context of introducing myself

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T gives Ss time to say their names and ages in one round. This stage can break the ice and review some greeting language for the Ss.

Pre-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T models one sentence on the board: "I am good at basketball". T mimes playing basketball and scoring a goal to show he is successful. T repeats the sentence with a happy face. T asks and models the sentence with fingers. Im + good at + .... T asks the class to help him finish the sentence. T gives live reactions to the correct answers during elicitation.

Pre-Reading #2 (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T divides the Ss into 2 groups. One word for each group for a pantomime competition. T models the game with some random, simple words, e.g., drinking, walking, etc. T gives each word to the player from each group and lets the game start.

While-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T helps the Ss read the questions in part 18 first. Then reads the text out loud for the Ss. T gives the Ss time in groups to find the answers in the text. T models answering Q 1.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T puts the Ss in two lines and instructs them to have short conversations, saying "I'm good at..." after greetings and saying their names. T gives a demo before Ss start.
