Description

In this lesson, Ss learn vocabulary used to describe the places where people live and then read some classified advertisements from a website which enables its members to arrange a houseswap.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with opportunities to read for gist and for detail about housing types in the context of a website advertising houseswaps.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of housing lexis in the context of houseswaps
  • To provide specific information from a listening practice using a text about housing in the context of houseswaps

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Draw a house on board. Jokingly suggest it is my home. Describe it - old, small, comfortable. Near to Kadikoy. Nominate S to come to board. ''Do you want to draw your house?'' Say ''Tell me about your house.'' Nominate another S to come to board. Same.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible by introducing relevant vocabulary.

Ss to work in pairs. Show exercise 1. Ss to talk about answers. Matching exercise. Feedback - show answer key via projector. Tell students now we have listening. Show exercise 2. Ss to read through question. Play listening once. Feedback - elicit responses from Ss. Same pairs as exercise 1. Ss to talk together. Ss to complete exercise about themselves. Monitor and help if needed. Feedback - nominate one pair.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Show Ss handout 2. Move end student from horseshoe and form new pairs. In pairs. Exercise 4. Ss read and answer T/F Qs. Feedback by eliciting responses from whole group. Now show Ss handout 3. In pairs. Exercise 5. Feedback by eliciting response from whole group.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed reading task

Point to handout 3. Ss to read passage again. Individual Now answer exercise 6. Feedback - nominate Ss to answer.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In small groups. Ss decide which house they like best. Why? Monitor and help as required. Ss remain seated but feedback to whole class.
