In this lesson, Ss will begin using Empowered Second Edition C1. Ss will practice talking about language and effective learning strategies.

Main Aims

To provide practice speaking for fluency in the context of language learning

Subsidiary Aims

To provide practice reading outloud
To provide practice for Ss using assumptive language and inferencing based on personal experience and general knowledge

Procedure (78-90 minutes)

Lead-In (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Discuss the questions on Pg. 6 using the picture.

Reading (55-60 minutes) • For Ss to practice discussing language learning strategies and reading outloud

T conducts discussion using the 7 questions from 1a. | Ss take turns reading paragraphs from the blog post, while T gives corrections on pronunciation when needed. | Ss answer questions in 1b. | Ss answer questions 1c individually, then compare answers before OCFB.

Grammar (15-20 minutes) • For Ss to take note of adverbials and learn how to use them

T writes adverbials on the board, then has Ss categorize them using 2a. T gives examples and CCQs to ensure Ss know what adverbials are, and how to categorize them. | T writes exercises from 2b and has Ss decide which adverbials can change order. | Exercises 2c assigned for homework, Pg. 138 a and b.
