Lesson 3 (Ushizu): How Do You Feel? (Emotions & Physical Feelings)
Senior High School - lower intermediate (CEFR A2-B1) level

Description

This lesson is built around one goal in addition to the language content: **keep students physically active and awake throughout.** Every new word is taught with a gesture students perform themselves, not just heard. The lesson teaches two groups of feeling words - emotions (happy, sad, angry, excited, nervous, scared, surprised, bored) and physical body feelings (hungry, thirsty, tired, hot, cold, sick) - and includes a full-class movement game (Feelings Freeze) plus a mingling speaking activity. There is deliberately no long stretch of the lesson where students only sit and listen. **Lesson length:** 50 minutes **Lesson type:** PPP (Presentation - Practice - Production), built around movement to keep energy high

Materials

Abc Music player/phone with a short upbeat playlist
Abc How do you feel presentation

Main Aims

  • Students will learn and use eight emotion words and six physical feeling words to say how they feel, using the frame "I feel/I am ___.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will practice asking and answering "How do you feel?" in a moving, speaking-focused game and mingling activity.

Procedure

Warmer (3-4 minutes) • Physical Energizer

Greet class and ask how they are feeling. Then before teaching anything, lead the whole class in a 30-second stretch: stand up, reach up high, shake out arms and legs, roll shoulders. Then ask: "How do you feel now? Tired? Awake?" Take a few quick answers. Introduce the topic: "Today we are learning about feelings!"

Presentation 1 - Emotions with gestures (8-9 minutes) • Teach the eight emotion words one at a time.

For each word: say it, show/do the gesture, have the whole class stand and do the gesture with you while saying the word together, then ask one CCQ. Keep pace brisk - the goal is energy, not a long explanation for each word.

Controlled Practice 1 - Emotion "Simon Says" (7-8 minutes) • Gives students an opportunity to use the words/actions they've just learned to cement learning.

Call out emotions in random, fast order; students immediately strike the matching gesture/pose. Speed up gradually to raise energy. Occasionally call a word students already know well from other lessons (e.g., "happy") to keep it fun and achievable.

*Presentation 2 - Physical feelings with gestures (8-9 minutes) • Teach 6 physical feeling words and actions

Same method as Presentation 1, now for the six physical feeling words (hungry, thirsty, tired, hot, cold, sick). Whole class stands and does each gesture together, says the word, CCQ after each.

Controlled Practice 2 - Feelings Freeze (6-8 minutes) • Gives students an opportunity to use the words/actions they've just learned to cement learning.

Play upbeat music. Students move freely around the room/their space. Stop the music suddenly and call out a feeling word (emotion or physical feeling) - students must freeze in the matching pose immediately. Restart the music and repeat with a new word each time, mixing emotions and physical feelings. Run 6-8 rounds.

Production - Mingling: "How do you feel?" (6-6 minutes) • Natrual conversation practice

Students walk around and ask 4-5 classmates "How do you feel today?" using the target words to answer. Encourage variety - try not to give the same answer twice. Monitor and listen in, but don't interrupt.

*Wrap-up (4-5 minutes)

Invite 2-3 volunteers to act out one feeling silently for the class to guess. Quickly review all 14 words as a class, doing each gesture one final time together. Praise the class's energy and close warmly.
