C1 level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about and practice using the 4 types of linking sounds.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with examples and practice of Linking, Intrusion, Assimilation, and Elision

Subsidiary Aims

  • For Ss to practice advanced pronuciation
  • For Ss to practice speaking for accuracy

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-15 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T writes sentences on the board and asks Ss what kind of sounds are changing between words

Linking and Intrustion (12-15 minutes) • To give Ss an understanding of linking and intrusion sounds and practice using them

T writes sentences on the board that feature linking sounds and gives CCQs to elicit what sounds are changing. | Consonant - vowel (linking): 1. How are you doing? (howare) 2. Where are you going? (wherare) | Vowel - vowel (intrustion): 1. I can't go out (gowout) 2. We're going to go over it together. (gowoever) (Point out linking in "doing" (doowing))

Assimiliation (15-20 minutes) • For Ss to understand the 3 types of assimilation and how to use them

T writes examples sentences on the board, says them out loud, and elicits what sounds are changing. | Regressive (sound after changes the one before) examples: 1. Ten cars (teng cars) 2. Green beans (greem beans) | Coalescent examples: 1. Did you (did-jyu) 2. Don't you (don-chyu) | Progressive (sounds before changes one after) examples: 1. Dogs (dogz) vs Cats (voiced vs unvoiced) 2. At night (ah-night (glottal stop)) | Mention that progressive assimilation is not widely agreed upon by linguists because its not clear if the change in sound is caused by preceding letter or other grammar rules.

Elision (15-20 minutes) • For Ss to understand the 3 types of elision and how to use them

T writes examples sentences on the board, says them out loud, and elicits what sounds are changing. | Consonant elision: 1. Next day (nex day) 2. Last night (las night) 3. Friendship (fren ship) | Vowel elision: 1. Family (famly) 2. Camera (camra) 3. Business (bizness) | /h/ elision: 1. Tell him (tell im) 2. Give her (give er) | Elicit that /h/ elision happens with unstressed pronouns (compare "I want YOU to tell him" with "I want you to tell HIM".

Test (15-20 minutes) • To test Ss knowledge of linking sounds

T hands out linking sounds quiz and tells Ss they will have 10 minutes to complete individually. | OCBF
