In this lesson , the students learn about kind of sports and the verbs which collocate with each sport.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of kinds of sports

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of sports


Warmer/Lead-in (0-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask the students if they like sports. If they answer yes,ask them which kind they prefer to practice. If there anyone doesn't practice any sports,ask them which kind of sport they prefer to watch.

Exposure (3-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Show the students some pictures about sports. let them try to identify these pics. Now, make a discussion with the students about the pictures. After that , tell the students the correct information about sports.

Highlighting (1-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Now,according to ex.1, let the students look at the words of sports at the box. The students try to define these sports. Let them work in pairs to check answers.

Clarification (4-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

After the students tried to define the words and checked about the answers together, I will tell them more information about these sports to clarify the meaning. After that , I will give them some examples about the context. Let the students give more examples To clarify the pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (2-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

According to ex.1, the students should list the sports at the box according the criteria (a-f). Monitor them to check understanding. Let them exchange their answers together to check the answers Answers : water sports fishing,surfing,swimming,etc Team sports: football,baseball,volleyball,etc.

Semi-Controlled Practice (2-4 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

According to ex.2 , let the students write some statements for each point in this exercise . Let them work in pairs. monitor them . Now , let them exchange their answers and discuss them together.

Free Practice (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

At the end, let the students write down three lists contains do,go,play. Let them list the sports from ex.1 through these criteria . Let them work in pairs. Examples : do : judo,karate,athletics go : swimming,fishing,surfing,etc. play : tennis,football,baseball,etc.
