Quantifiers with Food — Text-Based Guided Discovery
A2 level

Description

This lesson is about quantifiers and uses a text based guided discovery method. The context is food. The lesson starts with a lead-in task with 2 questions from exercise 2a to elicit the context (food). For exposure, the teacher plays the audio on page 19, exercise 5 and students listen and answer. Then the teacher checks the answers together with the class and shows the answer key. For the discovery task, students do exercise 6 on page 19 in pairs, and then the teacher shows the answer key. After that the teacher chooses 2 sentences to model and drill, first without showing the sentences and eliciting the stresses, then showing the sentences with the stresses. Then students do exercise 8 for controlled practice and exercise 9 for freer practice. The lesson ends with feedback.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to use quantifiers (some, any, much, many, a lot of) to talk about food.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop listening skills (listen and answer) and to pronounce the stressed words in sentences with quantifiers.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher asks 2 questions from exercise 2a (page 18) to elicit the context (food). Students answer in pairs or as a class.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The teacher plays the audio on page 19, exercise 5. Students listen and answer. The teacher checks the answers together with the class, then shows the answer key.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher chooses 2 sentences from the text and models and drills them. First without showing the sentences and eliciting the stresses, then showing the sentences with the stresses.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Students do exercise 6 (page 19) in pairs. This is the guided discovery task, where students notice the meaning and form of the quantifiers. The teacher then shows the answer key and clarifies anything unclear.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students do exercise 8. The teacher monitors and helps if needed.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students do exercise 9. They talk more freely using the quantifiers, related to the context of food.

Feedback (8-10 minutes) • To correct students' errors with the target language and give feedback on their use of quantifiers.

The teacher gives feedback on errors heard during the practice stages and corrects them with the class.
