Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice speaking for accuracy and fluency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (15-20 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T gives out minimal pairs handout, then writes a few pairs on the board and tells Ss he/she will say one of the words in each pair, and Ss have to pick the correct word. | T drills pronunciation if Ss struggle with the differences.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T gives out conditionals quiz, and tells Ss they will have 10 minutes to complete individually.

Teach (20-25 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T collects tests and decides which conditionals need to be reviewed, giving more and examples and CCQs as needed.

Test #2 (15-20 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T give out conditionals quiz again, giving Ss another 10 minutes to complete. | OCFB

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T writes prompts on the board and elicits 2nd and 3rd conditionals from Ss.

Intro to mixed conditionals (5-7 minutes) • To check students' knowledge of mixed conditionals / make them aware of them

T writes a mixed conditional sentence on the board, then asks Ss which conditional it is. Elicits the fact that there are elements of more than one conditional, then tells Ss its called a "mixed conditional".
