Lower Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will practice listening for specific information to complete a set of notes about writing a quiz, and develop speaking skills by talking about themselves using phrases for likes, dislikes, habits, and opinions.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To develop listening comprehension skills for specific information (notes completion). To provide controlled and freer speaking practice on personal details, likes, dislikes, and habits using functional language.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To analyze and utilize structural language from the Prepare to speak box (e.g., modifying preferences and habits with adverbs and linking reasons).

Procedure

Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T directs students to the Listening section, Exercise 1 (Have you ever taken a quiz? Who was it for? What did you ask?). T has students discuss briefly in pairs, then elicits 2–3 quick answers from the room.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T directs students to Exercise 2 (Read the notes. What are they about? What kind of information is missing in each space?). T gives students 2 minutes to inspect the "Notes for Writing a Quiz" block and predict word types (e.g., numbers, names, dates, email parts).

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T plays the audio for Exercise 3. Students listen and complete gaps 1–6 independently, writing one or two words, a number, a date, or a time. T has students compare answers in pairs before checking as a class.

Transition to Speaking (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T transitions to the Speaking section ("Talking about yourself"). T plays the interview audio for Speaking Exercise 1, having students tick which questions Ahmed and Sandrine answer and if they add extra info.

Language Focus (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T directs students to Speaking Exercise 2 and the Prepare to speak box. T reviews expressions for Likes and dislikes, Talking about habits, and Giving an opinion (e.g., I prefer..., I usually..., I think it's...).

Freer Practice • To provide with an opportunity to practice what taught in Language Focus

T puts students in pairs for Exercise 3. Students take turns asking and answering questions 1–6 (e.g., What's your surname?, Do you play sports? Why/Why not?), using phrases from the Prepare to speak box to add extra details. T gives FB & DEC.
