Procedure (31-41 minutes)
Ask Ss to talk to each other and answer the following questions: What is your happiest memory? Why do we remember some moments but forget others? Elicit that we are going to be talking about memorable moments.
Tell Ss they are going to listen to an audio about a person's memorable moment. Tell Ss not to worry about any vocabulary they don't understand and to listen for the main idea. After the audio is played, show Ss PPT slides 3 and 4. Assign students to the slides and ask them to circle the false statement. Ask instruction-checking questions: Can you move the circle on the page? Do you have editing access? Are we circling one statement? (yes) Check answers in OCFB.
Meaning On PPT (Slides 5 and 6), ask Ss to match the words to the pictures. Assign a slide to each student and ask instructional clarifying questions: Give me a thumbs up if you are able to drag the words around. Ask CCQ: Are lighthouses usually near the sea? (Yes) Do they have a bright light? (Yes) Are there five parts in the meal? (Yes) Are they five different meals? (No) Do you share both parents? (No) Do they have the same mother or father as you? (Yes) Form Show PPT slide 7 with the vocabulary words. Ask Ss: Are these words nouns or verbs? (Nouns) Are they made up of two words? (Yes) Are the two words both nouns? (Yes). Tell Ss these are nouns made by joining two words together. If students answer that they are verb phrases, show the following example sentences -- The chef served us a delicious five-course meal. My half-brother loves to cook. We saw the lighthouse far away while walking on the beach. -- and ask students to identify the parts of speech (subject, verb, noun). Pronunciation Show Ss slide 8. Tell Ss that all these words follow the same stress pattern, and ask Ss: Is the stress at the beginning or end of the words? Have students drill the words on mute, then with their mics on.
Share the screen with the Google Form for activity #2. Tell Ss they are going to listen to the audio again. Tell students that this time, they should listen for details about the story, like what the speaker knew about the trip, where he stayed, what he ate, what he bought, and what experiences they had on the trip (3 min). After the audio is played, share the screen to the Google Form and paste the link in the chat. Tell Ss they are going to read the statements and answer whether they are true, false, or not given. Do the first question together. Tell Ss to take 3 minutes to answer the questions individually, but wait to submit the form. Instruct Ss to compare answers before submitting, and instruct Ss to justify their answers with where they found the information in the text. Once students compare answers, they will submit the form. During OCFB, utilize the audio script to point out any information that comes up during OCFB. Answers to Activity: 1. He got an unexpected call from his brother at work. TRUE 2. He knew why his brother wanted him to go to Norway. FALSE 3. He booked his flight 2 days before September 23rd. NOT GIVEN 4. At the airport, he was met by a stranger. TRUE 5. He knew his half-brother and half-sisters were going to be in Norway too. FALSE 6. The speaker spent the first night eating prawns and drinking beer. TRUE 7. The speaker bought a new watch with the money his brother gave him. NOT GIVEN 8. On their last night together, they went to a blues concert, followed by a three-course meal. FALSE
Tell Ss they are going to take 5 minutes to write 3-4 sentences about a memorable moment they have had. Share a Google Doc with them and assign them to tabs. Show them PPT slide 10, and ask them to try to use as many of these phrases in their writing as possible. When the five minutes are up, show slide 11 on the PPT, and ask them to take about 2 minutes each to ask each other questions about their memorable moments (If there is a time crunch, have students simply share their writing in OCFB). With the written and spoken input, provide DEC.
