Writing
A2 level
Main Aims
-
To provide product writing practice of a film review
Subsidiary Aims
-
Students will review and use the target language (amazing, kind, touching, brilliant, exciting, moving, I recommend)
Procedure (41-15 minutes)
The students will be asked: What is your favourite film? Why do you like it?
The students will be introduced to this text: Forrest Gump is an amazing film about a kind man from Alabama. He becomes a football star, a soldier, and a businessman. The story is funny, touching, and inspiring. The scenes are exciting and moving. Tom Hanks gives a brilliant performance. I recommend this classic movie to everyone. Then they will be given a gist task. They will be given these questions: What is the film about? What does the writer think about it?
The students will be shown the meaning and form of the target language. Meaning: Amazing - Very surprising or very good Kind - Caring, nice Touching - Makes you feel sad Brilliant - Very good or very smart Exciting - Makes you feel happy and want to know more Moving - Makes you feel strong emotions Inspiring - Makes you want to do something good I recommend - I think you will really like FORM: The first 7 words are all adjectives ( a word that describes a noun or pronoun) Sentence placing: Adjectives can modify a noun directly “That’s an amazing film” Or follow a pronoun using a linking verb “She is kind” I recommend - pronoun + verb
The students will be given this task: Write a short film review of your favourite film. Include this: TOPIC SENTENCE - Film name, type of film (comedy, drama, action, thriller, etc.) FILM DETAILS - Why is the film interesting?(use adjectives)(e.g. amazing, kind, touching, brilliant, exciting, moving, inspiring) CONCLUDING SENTENCE - Give your opinion (I recommend this film because…)
In breakout rooms, students will be asked to check their peer's writing. they will be given a peer checklist: Did he/she include all 3 parts of the layout? Is there an opinion? Is there a topic sentence? Did he/she include adjectives? Are there any spelling errors?
