Describing a Picture/ Photo ( SPEAKING)

Materials

Abc Gap fill hand out, PPT, worksheet, colored papers, white board and Gold experience book

Main Aims

  • Students will be able to describe a photo for about 1 minute using a clear structure and appropriate descriptive language. Based on the uploaded material: students practice talking about who, where, what, appearance/clothing, and actions, using introductory and descriptive phrases.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: Identify the people, place, objects, and actions in a photo. Use useful phrases to introduce and describe a picture. Use present continuous to describe actions. Add reasons/evidence when describing what they see. Speak about a photo for 45–60 seconds with fewer pauses

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will divide the class into two groups then show a word from the PPT slides with jumbled (personal nouns, places , adjective, things) words. Then the students will race on writing the correct words on the board. The team who can finish first, with the correct answer and correct spelling will get the points. Then the teacher will call another set of students to do the activity. The first team that can get 5 points will be declared the winner.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

The teacher will Show Photo A and Tell students: “Imagine you have to speak about this photo for one minute. What information should you include?” Elicit four areas: The 4-Step Photo Formula 1. INTRODUCE “I think this photo shows…” 2. PLACE “It looks like they are in…” “This picture was probably taken in…” 3. PEOPLE & ACTIONS “There are…” “The woman is…” “They seem to be…” 4. REASON / INFERENCE “I think they are… because…” “It looks as if…” “They might be…”

Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

The students will do the Game: “Photo Detective”. Put students into 5 teams. The teacher will show each pair Photo A. Student A has 45 seconds to describe the picture. The students will say the … ✓Place ☐People ☐Objects ☐Actions ☐ Reason / guess ☐ they see in the photo. Challenge Round Students must describe the picture again, but this time they cannot use: ❌ “There is…” ❌ “There are…” They need to use: “I can see…” “The picture shows…” “In the background…” “On the left/right…” “It looks like…”

Planning (8-13 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

The teacher will give the students Photos to describe and Tell them: “You are going to describe this photo for one minute. You have 3 minutes to prepare.” Give them this planning framework: My Photo Plan 1. Introduction This picture shows __________________________. 2. Place It looks like _______________________________. 3. People I can see __________________________________. 4. Appearance / clothes They are wearing ____________________________. 5. Actions They are ___________________________________. 6. Background In the background, __________________________. 7. Guess / reason I think they are __________________ because ____________.

Report (3-5 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

The teacher will ask the students to write their work on the board. The students will present their work according to the tasks given to them. After all the students do their tasks. The teacher will sum up all the parts. Then ask random students to read the whole parts. (the whole description of the photo)

Language Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

The teacher will show random photos then pick random students to describe the photo. While other students will identify the parts or words that the students mentioned in describing the photo.
