Procedure (25-37 minutes)
The teacher introduces the topic of sports through a lively sports song. Students listen, sing along and copy simple movements connected with different sports and actions. The activity activates students’ prior knowledge, creates an energetic atmosphere and prepares them for the lesson topic.
The teacher introduces and presents the target sports vocabulary using clear, colourful visuals. Students listen and repeat the words several times using different voices and volumes, for example quietly, normally and loudly. The teacher uses repetition and quick visual checks to support pronunciation, recognition and meaning.
The teacher draws students’ attention to the actions associated with different sports. Students look at pictures and identify what people do in each sport, for example, kick, hit, catch, throw and bounce. The teacher elicits simple responses from students and prepares them for the target sentence structure. The teacher introduces and demonstrates the target action verbs: kick, hit, throw, catch and bounce. Students stand and copy the teacher’s movements while repeating the verbs. The teacher gradually combines movement and language, for example “kick the ball”, “hit the ball”, “throw the ball” and “bounce the ball”. Concept-checking questions and gestures are used to ensure students understand the meaning of each verb.
Bamboozle — Sports Recognition Students work in teams and play a Bamboozle game to identify and distinguish different sports. Students look at pictures or clues and give the correct sport vocabulary. The teacher monitors participation, checks pronunciation and awards points for correct answers.
The teacher models the target sentence structure and guides students to build complete sentences about sports and actions. Students practise individually using visual prompts and sentence frames. The target language includes “I play ___ with my ___” and “I ___ the ball.” Students gradually produce sentences with less teacher support. On the board: I play basketball with my dad. I play tennis with my mum. I kick the ball. I hit the ball. I catch the ball. I throw the ball. I bounce the ball.
Students work in teams and take part in a communicative sports game. Students choose or are given a sport and an action, then produce a complete sentence using the target language.
