This will be a Speaking lesson for a Pre-Intermediate class. The topic is Living without the internet.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of speaking for fluency in the context of living without the internet.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Practice lexis: watch news, text friends, do online banking, check emails, shop online, use social media

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students will be asked: "What kind of activities do you do on your phone/computer?"

Content Preparation (7 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

The students will be introduced to these phrases: Text friends, Do online banking, Shop online, Watch news online, Use Social Media, Check emails. They will be asked: In your opinion, is life better or worse because of the internet? Has your life changed because of the internet? They will have these sentences they can use (as a suggestion) to use in their conversation: In my opinion… I agree/don’t agree… In my experience… That’s true, but…

Language Preparation (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

The key points of form for the phrases mentioned before will be taught to the students. A matching quiz will be given to the students where they will match the appropriate phrase to the corresponding picture. Main points of form will be taught to the students(MFP). The students will match the meaning to the phrase. The form will be presented to the students in the slideshow, and the pronunciation will be shown in the slides, and then pronunciation drilling will be done. The students will be shown useful collocations.

Speaking (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

The students will be given these questions: From these activities: Text friends, Do online banking , Shop online, Watch news online, Use Social Media, Check emails. Discuss which two activities are the most important for you and why. Could you live without the internet for one day? Why/why not? They can use these sentences if needed: "I could/couldn't live without the internet because..." “If I didn’t have the internet, I would/wouldn’t…”

Feedback and Error Correction (5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Feedback and error correction will be provided on the lesson.
