Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and controlled and freer practice of family-member vocabulary in the context of families and relationships.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with accuracy and fluency speaking practice using family vocabulary and adjectives to describe families.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students and activate their existing knowledge of family vocabulary.

T shows family pictures and elicits family vocabulary. Ss discuss: “Who can you see?” and “What makes a family special?”

Presentation (12 minutes) • To present and clarify family vocabulary.

T shows the family pictures from the lesson and elicits family members. T presents dad, mum, son, daughter, brother, sister, grandpa, grandma, grandson, granddaughter, uncle, aunt, cousin. T checks meaning with CCQs and drills pronunciation.

Practice (8 minutes) • To provide controlled practice of the target vocablary.

Ss complete the family-word chart and categorise the words into Male/Female. Ss then work in pairs with a family tree and answer questions about family relationships. T monitors and checks answers.

Production (8 minutes) • To give Ss freer speaking using the target language.

T presents adjectives: fun, loving, friendly, helpful, caring, fantastic. Ss complete and discuss: “My family is ___ because ___.” Ss share their sentences with the class.

Free Practice (7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss work in pairs and interview each other: “Who is in your family?” “What is your family like?” “What makes your family special?” Ss then tell the class one interesting thing about their partner's answer.

Feedback & Error Correction (5 minutes) • To consolidate learning and check the lesson outcome. Whole-class and individual checking.

T reviews key vocabulary and addresses common errors. Ss answer one exit question: “What makes a family special?”
