WH Clauses + Relative Clauses

Description

This lesson reviews WH clauses and relative clauses together, helping students recognize the different jobs clauses can perform inside a sentence. Students compare clauses that complete an idea or provide information with clauses that describe or identify a noun. The lesson prioritizes meaning, sentence building, and communication rather than terminology.

Main Aims

  • To enable students to distinguish between and accurately use WH clauses and relative clauses when giving, requesting, and adding information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To reinforce statement word order in WH clauses and embedded questions.
  • To reinforce the use of who, that, which, where in relative clauses.
  • To help students identify what information a clause is connected to.
  • To reduce common errors caused by confusing WH clauses and relative clauses.

Procedure

Activation (25-30 minutes) • To activate spontaneous speaking, justification, and interaction at the beginning of class.

Put students in pairs or small groups. Give them ridiculous Would you rather...? questions. For example: Would you rather lose your phone for a month or your wallet for a week? Would you rather be able to read minds or become invisible? Would you rather have a pet dinosaur or a pet dragon? Would you rather never drink coffee again or never eat tacos again? Would you rather work four very long days or six short days? Would you rather accidentally send your boss a meme or your mom your search history?

Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To reinforce the week's vocabulary through retrieval and oral production.

Ask students to give you the vocabulary cards of the day. Teacher checks them in case of spelling mistakes or wring definition. Put participation on the Excel.

Write: -I know where the veterinarian works. -The clinic where the veterinarian works is very busy. Ask: -What's the difference? Let them struggle with it first. Then visually show: -I know [WHERE THE VETERINARIAN WORKS]. - What do I know? Information. -The clinic [WHERE THE VETERINARIAN WORKS] is very busy. -Which clinic? It describes "the clinic."
