Main Aims

  • Develop students' listening skills through a discussion of smart home technology using both: Top-down listening Bottom-up listening

Subsidiary Aims

  • Vocabulary. Students will learn and practice: smart home smart fridge heating camera vacuum cleaner technology diet control operate useful
  • Speaking. Students will discuss advantages and disadvantages of smart homes and express opinions.
  • Listening. Students will: understand the general idea of the recording (gist); identify specific information; understand detailed information; recognize key words and weak forms in connected speech.

Procedure

Anticipated Problems and Solutions • Predicting possible problems and solutions for them

Problem: students may not know technological vocabulary. Solution: Pre-teach key words through pictures and matching; Problem: Students may focus on every unknown word. Solution: Remind them that first listening is only for the general idea; Problem: Students may confuse similar answer options; Solution: Train students to listen for key words rather than individual words. Problem: Students may not recognize familiar words in connected speech. Solution: Include a Listening for Perception stage.

Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • Activate background knowledge (Top-down)

Students discuss: What is a smart home? What technology can it have? Would you like to live in one? Teacher collects ideas on the board.

Pre-listening Vocabulary (5-5 minutes) • Prepare students for listening.

Matching words to pictures. Example: Word Picture heating 🔥 vacuum cleaner 🤖 camera 📷 Quick concept-check questions: Which device cleans floors? Which device helps you see what is happening in your house?

Prediction Task (Top-down) (3-3 minutes) • Activate prior knowledge

Students look at the picture and predict: What information will the speakers mention? Possible answers: smart fridges cameras phones robots

First Listening (5-5 minutes) • Listening for Gist

Choose the best summary. A. The speakers discuss modern home technology. B. The speakers discuss healthy eating. C. The speakers discuss mobile phones. Correct answer: A Feedback as a class.

Second Listening (7-7 minutes) • Listening for Specific Information

True / False Smart homes can be controlled with a mobile phone. Smart fridges help people choose clothes. Smart fridges can remind people to buy food. Smart homes appeared only recently. Answers: True False True False

Third Listening (8-8 minutes) • Listening for Detail

Multiple Choice Example 1 Smart fridges can help people: a) cook dinner b) improve their diet c) clean the kitchen Example 2 Jane thinks smart homes: a) make people lazy b) are too expensive c) help people save time Answers: 1 – b 2 – c

Listening for Perception (5-5 minutes) • Develop recognition of spoken language.

Task 1 Students listen and mark which words they hear. heating fridge camera technology robot mobile phone Task 2 Notice pronunciation. Students identify: can / can't will / won't Examples from audio: "You can control cameras." "They won't just clean floors." Teacher briefly highlights weak pronunciation of can /kən/.

Post-listening Discussion (8-10 minutes) • Move from listening to speaking.
