Abc Reading for Gist and Specific Information

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing of a postcard to a friend. Students will learn chunks of language while writing.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Ss will practice reading subskills (gist and specific information) in the context of reading a postcard to a friend.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. The teacher will show pictures of vacations. 2. The teacher will introduce to the Ss these questions: a) What do you see in the pictures? b) Do you like going in vacations? c) Do you like to share what you do with people? 3. OCFB

Exposure (10-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

1. The teacher will show the Ss a model of a postcard she has written to a friend. a) The teacher elicits this question to Ss: -Who am I writing to? Fany, a friend of mine. -What is the main message? Sharing my holiday experience with her. -What kind of text is this? Personal and informal text. OCFB 2. Reading for specific information The teacher will share the Google-forms with Ss so they can read the postcard for specific information. a) Ss will read and then solve the 4 multiple choice questions about the TL from the postcard. 1. I'm having a great time. 2. I hope we can enjoy this soon. 3. You will love this. 4. I wish you were here.

Language (MAF) (10-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Ss will analyze language for the TL they will produce in the writing task. Meaning and Appropriacy 1. The teacher will give Ss a match the columns task with the TL found in the postcard (model). Pairwork. OCFB Form 1. The teacher will give Ss a fill in the blanks task for the structure in each TL sentence. Pairwork. OCFB

Productive Task(s) (12-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

The teacher will provide the Ss. the model for their own productive task (writing a postcard). 1. The teacher will give each student with a template, so they can write their postcard. 2. Ss will have 10 minutes to work on their writing. 3. The teacher will monitor Ss advance during those 10 minutes of typing the postcard.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

1. Ss will be given a checklist so they can peer check one of their classmates work (postcard). 2. OCFB 3. The teacher will give final comments on the task (content and language).
