This is a 30-minute reading lesson for six A2-level adult students based on “Passport, tickets, money, phone” from American English File 2. The lesson focuses on skimming for gist and scanning for specific information. Students predict the story, learn a few blocking vocabulary items, read for the main idea, and then scan the text for details. Finally, they discuss a personal experience of losing something important.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand the general idea and identify specific information in a short story by using skimming and scanning.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will use a small number of blocking vocabulary items to support comprehension and discuss a personal experience related to losing something.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (0-3 minutes) • arouse intrest/personalize topic.

Show a vacation picture. Ask: “Where did you go on your last vacation?" "What three things do you always take on vacation?” Elicit a few answers..

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • Create curiosity and prepare for reading.

Show the title and picture. Ask: “Look at the picture. Where is Sam? What do you think happened?” Do not confirm the answer yet

Blocking vocabulary (5-9 minutes) • Remove key lexical barriers without pre-teaching the whole text.

Teach only: top, climb, look for. Use simple picture/matching.

While-Reading (9-13 minutes) • Skim for overall meaning.

Give the Reading Handout. Say: “Read quickly. Don’t worry about every word. Answer: What did Sam lose? Did he find it?” Set 2 minutes. Then ask students to compare their answers with a partner and elicit the answer

While-Reading:spicific Information (13-21 minutes) • Scan for details and sequence.

Give Activity Handout. “Read again. Find the information and choose/correct the answers. You have 4 minutes.” Monitor; do not explain every word. then ask them to compare answers in pairs.

While-Reading: Whole-class feedback (21-25 minutes) • Check specific comprehension.

Display answers one by one. Ask students to give the answer and, when useful, point to the evidence in the text.

Post-Reading: Personalization (25-30 minutes) • Extend comprehension to meaningful speaking

Ask: “Have you ever lost something important? What was it? Where were you?” Students discuss in pairs and share a short personal experience.
