Description

In this lesson, they will learn simple past( both regular and irregular forms). Also, they will have some controlled practice related to the grammar.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of simple past in the context of last weekend

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation and discussion in the context of last week

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-The teacher will ask the students "what day is today?". -The students will provide the teacher with the correct answer. -The teacher will go backwards and ask the students what day was yesterday and so on, until they reach "SATURDAY" -The teacher will ask the students "how was the weather like on Saturday?" -The teacher will provide the student with the answer. -The teacher will ask the students to think about three things they have done last Saturday and ask some random students to share their ideas with the class (the teacher will not correct the students in this stage)

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-The teacher will provide the students with 3 different texts about three different teachers. -The teacher will write the three names on the board (Ara, Alize, Ghazal). -The students will then have to match the names with the correct text. -The teacher will ask the students to check their answers in pairs. -The teacher will write the answers on the WB.

Highlighting (6-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- The teacher will ask the students to underline all of the verbs in the texts that they have just read. -The students are have to do it individually for 2 minutes -The teacher will ask the students to check the answers in pairs. -The teacher will provide the students with some model examples on the WB. - I stayed at home. - I listened to music. - I phoned a friend. - I cooked some lunch. - I worked on my computer -The teacher will underline the verb of that model sentences.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-The teacher will clarify the meaning of simple past by using timeline and gestures. -The teacher will ask some CCQ to make sure the students understood the meaning. example: Is it in the past or now? Past Is it finished? YES -The teacher will clarify the pronunciation of "ED" at the end of the verbs. Example: Stayed, Cooked, Listened, Watched -The teacher will give the students some drilling activities ( first as a whole class activity, then will ask some random students to repeat) -The teacher will clarify the form by writing some model sentences on the board. ex. I stayed at home subject+ base form of the verb+ ed + rest of the sentence -At the end the teacher will focus a little bit on some regular verbs. Example: Go, Have, Get, Meet, write.

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- The teacher will provide the students with some papers. On the paper, there are base form and past form of the verbs. - The teacher will give one paper to one student and ask the student to read his/her verb. for example, he says "go". - The teacher will say " went". then, the teacher reads what she has and the student will say the other form of the verb. -Then they change their papers. -The teacher will ask all of the students to stand up and do the same thing.

Controlled practice 2 (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

- The teacher will provide the students with a text, which consist of fill in the blanks. - The students need to fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verb provided to them. -After the students answered individually, they will be asked to check their answers in pairs - The teacher will write the answers on the board.
