By the end of this lesson, students will be better able to use 5 functional language phrases in the context 'to refuse' invitations.
Subsidiary Aims

To provide practice of fluency with the functional language 'to refuse' invitations.

To provide reading practice (gist and specific information) using a text about 'to refuse' invitations with five phrases.
Procedure (36-42 minutes)
Ss will answer prompted questions from the teacher: 1. What is to refuse? 2. When do we use it? 3. Give an example. OCFB
Ss willl read a dialogue twice. The first time they read the conversation will be only to read for gist and give a title to the conversation by choosing one option from Google Forms (Section 1). After solving the answer there will be OCFB. The second time the Ss read the text they will read for specific information. Once they have read the text, Ss will solve the multiple choice (Section 2, Google forms) and find the five phrases to refuse an invitation. Once they finish this task they will peer check the answers. Finally, OCFB. Answers: 1. That sounds lovely, but I am quite busy. 2. I would love to, but I have other plans. 3. I'm sorry, but I can't make it. 4. Maybe next time. 5. I can't, but thanks for asking.
Meaning a) Ss will be given a cline to order the five functional phrases from most direct to less direct. -Answers for the cline: 1. I can't, but thanks for asking. 2. Maybe next time. 3. I'm sorry, but I cant' make it. 4. I would love to, but i have other plans. 5. That sounds lovely, but I am quite busy. Ss will do Peer check. OCFB b) Also, Ss will be elicited some functional phrases meaning. If they cannot answer then the teacher will help them. 'can't make it'-to be impossible to go to that place or event. 'I would love to'-I really want to. quite- a little, a lot, but not completely. Form Ss will be given a G-slide each from the teacher, and will do a gap fill activity to complete correctly the form of the 5 given functional phrases to refuse an invitation. Ss will do peer check. OCFB Pronunciation 1. The teacher will elicit and nominate Ss randomly to say correctly the 5 sentences with the functional language. Like that Ss will practice sentence stress. 2. Ss will practice with the teacher attitudinal intonation for these same 5 sentences. The teacher will elicit the correct intonation to one student randomly. Then, the teacher will explain the correct rise and fall (when appropriate) of each sentence. Ss will drill chorally with the correct intonation.
1. Ss will be given a Demo conversation so they can practice their speaking fluency. 2. After the Demo conversation has been set-up, the teacher will give the instructions to the Ss to replicate it with their partner. 3. Ss will be sent to BOR for 5 minutes. So, each of them can talk for 2.5 minutes and practice the given conversation. 4. Teacher will monitor the Ss while they're in their BOR. 5. Ss will come back from the BOR after 5 minutes.
Ss will be given Feedback and Delayed Error Correction by the teacher. The teacher will show the Ss valuable language and fluency mistakes from her observations (monitoring).
