Description

In this 30-minute reading lesson, students read three short stories about New Years Eve experiences. The lesson begins with a visual lead-in and prediction activity to activate students background knowledge and create interest in the topic. Students then learn two essential blocking words, followed by a first reading for gist and a second reading for specific information. Students compare their answers in pairs before whole-class feedback. The lesson ends with a short personalized speaking activity about how people celebrate New Years Eve.

Main Aims

  • To enable students to understand the main ideas and find specific information in three short texts about New Year’s Eve.

  • To develop students’ ability to use skimming and scanning strategies.
  • To give students an opportunity to personalize the topic through a short speaking activity.

Procedure

Greeting & Lead-in (3 minutes) • Activate background knowledge and arouse interest.

T greets Ss and shows a New Years Eve picture. T elicits what Ss can see and the topic. T asks if they like New Year and what people usually do. Ss briefly discuss with a partner, then T elicits 2. 3 answers.

Prediction (3 minutes) • Develop predicting and previewing skills.

T shows the title New Years Eve One to Remember or One to Forget? T briefly clarifies the expressions and asks Ss to predict whether the stories are about good or bad experiences.

Blocking Vocabulary (2 minutes) • Clarify essential vocabulary only.

T checks midnight with CCQs. T elicits countdown using 10. 9. 8 .7 .6 .. and checks it with CCQs. Elevator is clarified only if necessary.

While-reading 1: Skimming (4 minutes) • Read for gist. main idea.

T gives the Handout. Ss read the three stories quickly and match each person with great OK or terrible. T sets 2 minutes and monitors silently.

Pair Check + Feedback (2 minutes) • Peer-check gist comprehension.

Ss compare answers for 30 seconds. T checks answers with the class.

While-reading 2: Scanning (6 minutes) • Find specific information.

Ss read the stories again and complete six sentences with A/J/M. T sets 4 minutes and monitors. T guides Ss back to the text if necessary.

Pair Check + Feedback (4 minutes) • Confirm detailed comprehension.

Ss compare answers for one minute. T checks answers and refers to the text where useful.

Post-reading (5 minutes) • Personalize and extend the topic.

Ss discuss how people celebrate New Years Eve in their country using sentence starters. T monitors and notes useful language / errors.

Wrap-up (1 minutes) • Consolidate and personalize.

T asks which story was the best and why. T elicits 2.3 responses and closes the lesson.
