Description

In this lesson, student will practice reading skills through the use of a song using the context of climate change.

Materials

Main Aims

  • For S to practice reading for gist and detail

Subsidiary Aims

  • Practice speaking for fluency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start with a conversation about what weather S prefers (cold, hot, humid, dry, etc.) | Show Ss images and ask them to talk about what they see | Elicit "climate change" or "global warming", then ask Ss what they think about it.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss completes handout with phrases and definitions | T gives CCQs to check understanding

Listening (Gist) (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T instructs S to read song snippet in 1 minute, then answer questions from activity 2 CCQs (what did you read that told you this?)

Listening (Detail) (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T instructs S to read questions from activity 3, then read the entire song lyrics. T discusses answers with S after they have read it. | CCQs

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T plays music video while S reads lyrics. | T and S discuss further about climate change, possible solutions etc. | DEC
