Main Aims

  • To introduce ss to and give practice in free time vocabulary in the context of typical friends.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give ss practice in listening for gist, specific information & detail.
  • To give ss semi-controlled speaking practice & the opportunity to practice simple present.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To arouse interest in the topic, and to introduce common verb phrases. To prepare them for the following stages.

Draw a diagram on the board and write "friends" on the board. Write "men friends" on one side and "women friends" on the other. Tell the ss to copy the diagram. Then write the names of your women friends and two of your men friends next to the appropriate circles. Point to one and say, "This is Claire. I go dancing with Claire. She likes music." Point to another. "This is Patrick. I go to the cinema with Patrick. He likes movies." Tell ss to write the names of four friends. Then put them in pairs to talk about them with their partner.

Pre-Listening #1 (18-20 minutes) • To pre-teach key words.

Show ss the word cards. Use the cards to elicit the vocabulary items and drill the pronunciation. Then tell the sts to walk around the room in pairs/small groups and match the words with the pictures. Provide an answer key with pictures and words to give ss a written record. Make sure ss know do word "alone" by trying to elicit it from them. Ask sts to talk in pairs to ask and answer the questions in Vocabulary part exercise 2. After 2 minutes ask the pairs to report back. Give feedback.

Pre-Listening #2 (2-3 minutes) • To get students interested in the topic of the listening.

Sts read the web page in exercise 1 individually and say what it is about. Feedback deal with any problems.

While-Listening #1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks.

Tell the students to look at the words in exercise 2. Tell them to put a tick next to the words they hear in the listening text. Play the listening track. Ask them to check in pairs in 1 minute and then elicit answers from different students. Give feedback.

While-Listening #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Tell the ss to read through the sentences and decide which sentences refer to men (M), women (W) or both (MW). Then tell the ss that they will listen to the recording again. Play the recording again. Give ss a minute to check their answers in pairs and then elicit answers from different pairs for each question. Give feedback.

Flexi-stage - If time (2-4 minutes) • To recycle vocabulary items.

If time - Show the ss the vocabulary items from the beginning of the lesson again and practice choral and individual drilling.
