Description

in this lesson,students will learn the past continuous through a reading text about activities that were happening at a specific time in the past. they will explore the form and use of the tense and practice understanding and using it in context.

Materials

Abc american english file 2,unit 2 and some handsout

Main Aims

  • by the end of the lesson,students will be able to use the past continuous to talk about actions that were in prograss at a specific time in the past

Subsidiary Aims

  • by the end of the lesson,students will have practice reading for gist and information through a text about the story behind a photo

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1 The teacher shows students two pictures and asks 2 questions 1 How many times did you experience something unexpected? 2What were u doing when something unexpected happened ?

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

the teacher gives students the first half of the text and asks them to read it and answer gist to understand the context .

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher asks students to look at the text. The teacher then highlights the form and use of the past continuous and gives student some examples.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher clarifies the meaning,form and use of the past continuous. teacher will use CCQ to check the students understanding. in adittion gives them some examples of past continuous

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

here the teacher will give each student a handout with controlled practice activities. Students complete the exercise individually using the correct form of the past continuous.Then they compare their answers in pairs and teacher will check the answers with the whole class. ICQ

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The teacher gives each student a handout with prompts and asks them to make sentences with using the past continuous. students look at the handout, read the prompts and make the sentences with using the past continuous

Free Practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The teacher will ask a question and students start to discussing 1 what were you doing when u heard the most surprising new of uour life
