Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information in a listening practice using an audio about trusting your instincts in the context of work

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will practice listening and speaking. They will learn these words/phrases: salary, wedding anniversary, job interview

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask the students: Can you think of anyone you've met that you instantly liked or disliked? Do you generally trust your instincts?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

We will be going over these words/phrases: salary, wedding anniversary, job interview

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The students will listen to the audio to get a general idea of the story. They will then be presented with this activity: Listen to Tracy, Hal and Ann. Which of these things do they not talk about? a job interview a divorce a wedding anniversary first impressions salaries

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will listen to the story again, this time to get more detailed information. These questions will be presented to them: Which job was advertised? What did Hal think of the first person he saw? Why? Why does Malcolm Gladwell's book, Blink, come up in the conversation? Does Gladwell believe we follow our instincts too often? Do you think Ann believes in love at first sight? Why? /Why not?

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will discuss the audio subject further. They will discuss: Have you ever changed your initial opinion of someone? If so, why? Review questions. Answer students' questions
