Time Expressions and Connectors

Description

This lesson helps students understand and use common time expressions and connectors to describe routines, sequences, and past or future events more naturally. Students practice organizing ideas chronologically and improving the fluency of their spoken and written communication through personal and veterinary-related contexts.

Main Aims

  • Recognize the difference between time expressions and time connectors.

Procedure

Activation (25-30 minutes) • Let the students wake up and start the day with more energy and enthusiasm.

Start the day with a quick dynamic. What would you rather? Students will create funny questions for their classmates to answer.

Week's doubts (15-18 minutes) • Clear all doubts.

Go back to the other topics of the week. Students have the opportunity to ask all their doubts about them. Teacher explains and put examples.

Vocabulary Review (18-20 minutes) • To review vocabulary collected during the week and expand the vocabulary available to the whole group.

Teacher asks students to share useful or unfamiliar words they encountered during the week. Select the most relevant ones and write them on the board. Students copy the words they consider useful. Elicit or clarify meaning, pronunciation, word class, and example sentences. Include both general and veterinary vocabulary. Remind students that selected vocabulary may appear in the Grammar Weekly Test.

Presentation (30-32 minutes) • To help students understand the difference between expressions that indicate when something happens and words that connect actions in time.

Write two examples: I examined the dog yesterday. / I examined the dog after the technician took its temperature. Ask students what information yesterday gives and what after does. Establish the distinction: -Time expressions = tell us when. -Time connectors = connect actions/events. Present common expressions such as yesterday, last week, two days ago, every morning, nowadays, recently, tomorrow, next week. Then present connectors such as first, then, before, after, while, when, during, finally. Use a simple timeline and veterinary examples. Check understanding with oral examples from students.

Controlled Practice (18-20 minutes) • To check students' understanding and accuracy when selecting and using time expressions and connectors.

Exercise 1: Students classify words into Time Expressions or Time Connectors. Allow approximately 5 minutes and check together. Exercise 2: Students complete 10-12 sentences with the correct expression or connector. Mix general and veterinary situations. Check answers as a class and ask students to explain why each answer works.
